IIT Delhi Set to Revamp the Curriculum for all Courses, says new Director

In an interview, Banerjee stated that the curriculum must keep up with the pace of change in the knowledge and technology landscape. As a result, IIT-Delhi has established a panel to review the curriculum for all courses.

IITs have changed over the years from being engineering schools to full-fledged universities, he claimed.

According to Banerjee, the institute is thoroughly reviewing their curriculum in order to improve the learning environment for students. Over a decade has passed since the last exercise. IITs have moved from being primarily undergraduate and engineering colleges to full-fledged universities providing a variety of degrees.

It was necessary to completely overhaul the institute's curriculum since the institute wants to give students opportunities and challenges to interact with the actual world. As a result, a lot of changes are anticipated to be visible next year. Currently, the institute is doing in-depth consultation with faculty, students, and alumni, he continued.

Being a former Professor at IIT Bombay, Banerjee said that the information and technological landscapes are evolving quickly, and the course curriculum needs to keep up with the same.

He said that the curriculum has to evolve constantly for it to be relevant and both the classroom instruction and the practical modules needed to reflect this evolution.

Over 54,000 students have graduated from IIT Delhi since it was founded, with degrees in a range of fields like engineering, physical sciences, management, and humanities and social sciences.

Each academic entity at the institute will assess its courses in light of the concept note that the committee for curriculum review is currently working on.

After the curriculum revision, the institute anticipates having much more flexibility in its course offerings.

Apart from that, the institute has launched numerous new academic initiatives, including initiatives in cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security, and electric mobility, the director stated.

The difficulty which the institute faces nowadays is that the generation of students has a shorter attention span and classroom instruction cannot be the exclusive focus. The institute needs to assign them real-world projects, so they can practise problem-solving, he added.

Speaking about the research segment, Director Banerjee said the IIT Delhi curriculum will be planned to increase the impact of its research.

He said that space is a big constraint for the institute, consequently, it cannot physically increase the number of students on the campus, so, the institute is looking to increase the impact of its research.
