New Delhi: National Centre for Disability Studies of IGNOU has organized an assessment camp for providing support and aid to students with disabilities on July 07, 2022. The event was held in collaboration with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO).
The assessment camp of IGNOU was held at the convention center from 10 am to 5 pm for 100 students with disabilities. The camp was organized under the central government's Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase-Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) scheme.
Addressing the event, SK Prasad, Director of the National Centre for Disability Studies stated that as of now, the university has 15, 000 students with disabilities who are pursuing various IGNOU Courses. With his step, the university aims to offer benefits and relief to students across India.
In this statement, he further thanked Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India for supporting this initiative and providing assistive devices to students free of cost under the central government's scheme. IGNOU aims to extend this initiative to all its regional centers
Adding to the statement, Satyakam, PVC, IGNOU said, "the Rights of PWD Act, 2016 (RPwD Act, 2016) mandates education accessibility to persons with disabilities as well". He informed that university has taken several initiatives in this direction to extend support to its students.
Referring to the contribution of ALIMCO, he added, "they have easily provided aid such as sensor-based assistive devices (canes) for the visually impaired, hearing devices, and assistive devices for people with locomotor disabilities, etc".
Informing about other initiatives of IGNOU, Bharat Bhushan, Director of Equal Opportunity Cell stated that the university has also launched an EOC to ensure equal opportunities to all students, irrespective of their gender, disability, color, category, status, etc.
