MBA Through GMAT: Score Calculation
GMAT is a computer-adaptive test or CAT, which means that the computer adapts to the performance of the candidate while taking the test.
- As a candidate starts the GMAT, the computer assumes an average score and starts with a question of medium difficulty.
- As the candidate goes on answering the questions correctly, the computer increases the difficulty level of the questions.
- On the other hand, if a candidate answers questions incorrectly, the computer decreases the level of difficulty.
- The final score is determined not only on the basis of the number of correct responses but also on the difficulty level.
- The adaptive nature does not give the candidate the option to skip questions or go back to previous questions.
- There is negative marking for questions unanswered, so time management is of key importance.
Candidates will be scored on a fixed scale on all the sections of GMAT. Only GMAT Verbal and GMAT Quantitative scores are included in GMAT score whereas AWA and GMAT IR are included in the syllabus to measure the analytical aptitude of the candidates. GMAT Score report includes:
Section | Marks |
---|---|
GMAT Quantitative Score | 6-51 |
GMAT Verbal Reasoning | 6-51 |
Analytical Writing Assessment | 0-6 |
Integrated Reasoning | 1-8 |
- The Analytical Writing Assessment, which is an essay question, is marked by the human reader and a computer based program.
- The Integrated Reasoning section is not adaptive but the candidate cannot leave questions unanswered.
- Quantitative and Verbal sections are adaptive in nature.
