Euraxess Science Slam India 2022 : PhD Scholar from IIT Gandhinagar Awarded

New Delhi: The Euraxess Science Slam India 2022 is won by Satadru Chakrabarty, a PhD student in chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN). Five researchers from across the nation competed in Chennai's final round of the competition.

Chakrabarty received a roundtrip ticket to Europe as the winner of this year's India Science Slam, as well as the chance to network with other researchers at one of Europe's premier academic institutions. On the basis of the competitors' easy-to-understand video entries, which were necessary for the competition, the organisers chose five finalists, who then had to do a dramatic presentation of their research during the finals.

A live audience and a jury watched the five finalists from IIT Gandhinagar, TIFR Mumbai, NCBS Bangalore, CDFD Hyderabad, and JNCASR Bangalore perform. The judges graded them based on how well they were able to pique the interest of their audiences with a clear, understandable, and innovative introduction to their study topic.

Despite incorporating a few technical phrases, Chakrabarty's video presentation of his research on hydrogen production in the first round was done in the style of a short play to make it more enjoyable for the audience. He has found a new family of nanosheets that are generated from transition metal diborides while collaborating with associate professor of chemical engineering Kabeer Jasuja at IITGN.

The main focus of Satadru's research is the synthesis of titanium diboride nanosheets and their use in pertinent applications. He has discovered that these nanosheets can interact with light, and that this special interaction has potential uses. The researcher at IIT Gandhinagar worked with Saumykanti Khatua, an associate professor in the chemistry department, to combine such nanosheets with gold nanotriangles and utilise them as catalysts for splitting water to make hydrogen. It has been demonstrated that this method is useful in achieving a hydrogen-based economy.

Satadru Chakrabarty commented on this accomplishment by saying, "I think science communication is a vital part of being a successful researcher and a scientist. I'm happy that I can communicate my research in a way that people find intriguing. My faith in the ability of science communication has been strengthened by this victory. I would want my fellow scientists to view this as one of their high obligations. I want to express my gratitude to Euraxess India for giving me this fantastic opportunity to present my study as well as to IITGN for supporting me as a young researcher. I want to express my gratitude to the IITGN "Leadership Development Initiative" team for their unwavering assistance with my competition preparation. Last but not least, I think that this victory would not have been possible without Professor Kabeer Jasuja, my mentor and adviser, who never stopped motivating me. He is the reason why I have a talent for science communication. By the next year, I am eager to network and work with research colleagues in Europe. I'd want to take part in research on renewable or sustainable energy.
