Digital University of Kerala Signs MoUs with 4 UK Universities in the Domain of Graphene


New Delhi: The Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the Digital University of Kerala (DUK) had inked Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for partnership in the area of graphene with the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Siegen.

During an international summit, the MOU was inked by Vijayan and Industries Minister P Rajeev. A high-ranking team from the state, led by the chief executive, is touring Europe for several days.

At the conference, the chief minister stated that Kerala, which built the nation's first Digital University, had already taken moves to establish a graphene-based industrial park.

Noting that the state government's objective was to establish enterprises that utilized the latest generation technologies, he stated that the present MoUs were anticipated to boost Kerala's capacity further to conduct cutting-edge research and establish a knowledge-based economy in the sector.

"Kerala aspires to create a world-class ecosystem for graphene," Vijayan stated, stressing that entities interested in developing nanotechnology and future materials, such as graphene, will be supported. The establishment of a science park would also boost digital technology-based knowledge enterprises.

Digital University of Kerala has already been tasked with establishing the Digital Science Park as a leading centre for research and development in digital science and technology, the CM explained.

Distinguished scientist Andre Geim of the University of Manchester, who shared the 2010 Nobel Prize for discoveries related to graphene, was also present at the gathering.

Geim stated that the government's actions in the field of graphene would position the state as an industry leader in the future.

In addition to academics representing various foreign universities and high-ranking state officials, his pupil Rahul Nair was also attending the meeting, according to a CMO statement.
