Delhi University's Executive Council to Decide on Allowing Dual Degree Programs; Read Details Here

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Executive Council of Delhi University is planning to discuss the combined degree policy for students on December 8, 2022. The NEP 2020 recommends that students be permitted to pursue two college degrees concurrently, hence a meeting will be organised to discuss this idea.

Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) developed rules for the combined degree courses in May 2022. The UGC asked all universities to offer two academic degrees to students in physical form in October 2022. Delhi University is also considering offering students an option to pursue a combined degree.

The DU states that a council will be held in accordance with the newly updated new educational policy 2020, provided that no two degrees overlap. Additionally, the policy allows students to pursue two full-time degrees, one through traditional study methods and the other through Open Distance Learning (ODL) methods.

However, ODL courses are only available from universities and institutes that have received UGC approval. Furthermore, PhD programmes are not covered by these NEP criteria. UGC noted that these educational standards would encourage students to study a variety of subject combinations concurrently as well as flexible curricular arrangements.

According to the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022, the DU Executive Council will introduce the second-semester syllabus for more than 40 undergraduate programmes, including the BA, BCom, BSc, and others in the faculties of arts, science, mathematics, commerce and business studies among others.

The university has previously come under fire from the DU Teachers Association for failing to release the entire undergraduate degree syllabus in advance. Teachers at DU added that admitting students to a programme without giving them the entire material would be unfair.

Also, the council also highlighted, "uniformity in teacher-student ratios". There will be a set number of 60 students per classroom for all undergraduate programmes and 50 students per classroom for postgraduate programmes, according to the UGC release.
