Dr. Debasis Kar is the Owner and has also been working as the Director of Vidyasagar College of Optometry and Vision Science, Kolkata, West Bengal. He has done B. Optom (Hons.) and M. Optom as part of his academics. He has an amazing 21 years of experience in the education and teaching field and his area of specialization is Clinical Optometry.

How your college has made a positive difference in the field of Optometry in recent years?

Since its inception in 1998, VCOVS was started as a dream project, when a group of like-minded eye care professionals decided to create an institution to ensure a deep and lasting impact on the ongoing war against blindness in India. VCOVS has been dedicated to creating well trained and highly competent optometrists in the country to accomplish eradicating avoidable blindness. With dedicated professionals, academicians, and researchers by our side, we have really made a difference in our efforts by uplifting the standard of optometry nationwide through education and research. 

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practices of industry?

"It is aligned with latest industry developments and requirements and our courses are UGC approved"

We have successfully established a reputation for being at the forefront of optometry education in Eastern India and it has created an avenue for potential students willing to study optometry.

Our four-year Bachelor in Optometry (B.Optom) degree and two-year M.Optom courses are competitive and intensive full-time programmes, approved by UGC which have been designed to give students the academic and clinical knowledge with the latest infrastructure and best faculties available, and they are rigorously trained to maintain the standard and high demands for society.

Our Vidyasagar College of Optometry & Vision Science came into existence in 1998 and since then we have been working with a pledge, social commitment and distinct philosophy to churn out competent and responsible Optometrists by providing the best possible education and clinical experience. And our main objective is to produce technically proficient Optometrists by providing required clinical environments, tools and experts guidance to students and spreading their importance in the society. Apart from this, we encourage our students to acquire new knowledge and develop their skills on a regular basis. So I believe these factors together make us strong and resilient.

What are your roles and responsibilities for the college and students?

"I am responsible for designing the curriculum and maintaining compliance with industry and academic standards"

Being the Director of Vidyasagar College, I am solely responsible for student welfare, designing the curriculum of our college, developing the educational processes and policies for our college to stay compliant with academic and industrial standards and also to meet curriculum goals. In addition to this, I am accountable for arranging training programs in the latest technologies and techniques being used in the outside world, for faculty members. Also, developing unique and interactive educational programs and courses for students, managing faculty resources, administrative staff and other college resources, implementing faculty development programs and academic enhancement programs for students, scheduling regular meetings with college staff, assisting in preparing students’ report cards and attendance records and supervising that books stocks and other school supplies are present as needed also comes under the scope of my responsibilities.

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

"keep upgrading your skills and always live a disciplined life"

I want to tell aspiring students and youths of our society that observation is a gift, protection of vision is a Science and Optometrists are dedicated to this Science through rigorous academic and clinical teaching. So try to make a positive difference in society no matter if in the future you want to become an Eye Care Professional or pursue some kind of research program. Also, live your life to the fullest, stay dedicated and disciplined towards your goals and try to maintain a balance between your personal and professional life as both are necessary.
