Mr. Amit Gupte, presently working as a COO of the International Institute of Sports Management (IISM), has two decades of experience in the education industry. After completing his graduation from the University of Pune, he completed his masters from Sikkim Manipal University. He is proficient in Sales, New Business Development, Franchising, and Marketing. With expertise in understanding the market potential based on socio-economic and political factors, he has helped in the growth of many organizations to achieve their targeted visions.

In conversation with Ishita Patel, Mr. Gupte shares his views on the education and sports sector in India.

Education sector shapes the future leaders of the world

I have been a part of the education industry for two decades now, and it is one of the most satisfying industries to work in. This sector as a whole shapes the future of a nation as well as of the world at large. This is an industry that is moving upwards consistently, and there is no decline in it. Education is the fundamental block of any nation, and I am proud to be associated with it.

Be a leader who creates more leaders

I feel that one could be called a good leader when he helps others to become a leader. I ensure that people take up responsibilities and do tasks on their own so that they are conditioned to make decisions and become independent. I expect people to come up with ideas and solutions so that they see this as an opportunity to flourish. This is my own belief that organizations work better this way.

Not many girls are open to choosing Sports Management as a career field

Girls were not open much to choosing Sports Management as a career. In order to turn this scenario around, we initiated some campaigns to educate girls regarding the opportunities lying in the sports management sector. This had been one challenge that I faced as a COO of IISM. 

IISM Curriculum is a blend of Industry exposure and classroom learning

We offer three well-designed courses, namely Bachelor of Sports Management, Master of Sports Management, Postgraduate Program in Sports and Wellness Management. There is a criterion for admitting students in IISM, and we ensure that students get quality training. Most of our students land up in jobs at the beginning of their final year itself. We are doing good enough while keeping in mind the industry demands.

IISM aims to train students as industry-ready and flourish in their role as industry leaders

Established in 2010, IISM is India’s only of its kind dedicated sports management education provider and perhaps the largest such specialized institute in the entire South Asian continent. We provide students and young professionals with an in-depth understanding of the design and implementation of the evidence-based sports-specific training interventions and live sports project.

We organize many industry interactions on a timely basis. We invite Sports Management industry professionals to interact with the students so that they are up with what is happening in the field. Moreover, we have the faculties associated with the industry that furthers our aim of industrial exposure of students.

We have programs designed in such a way that we start grooming the students from their first day itself. We polish student’s skillsets, communication, writing skills, interview, and presentation skills.

Also, special sessions are organized for them so that they keep up with the Sports Management industry. Live event exposure like the Indian Premier League, Khelo India Youth Games, Pro Kabaddi League, and more, are given to our students throughout the year. With such steps, we intend to train our students to face the grinds in the industry.

Sports Management is still an untapped sector and holds immense potential worldwide

Sports Management is indeed a great career option in the contemporary age. As mentioned before, it is an untapped sector. Sportspersons who couldn’t continue playing sports due to their reasons can begin a new journey in the sports industry through Sports Management. All you need is zeal and a positive attitude. Choose your journey and justify it. In the end, you should be satisfied with what you have chosen.
