Mr Prasenjit Das is the Head of Department (Computer Science & Technology) at SCM Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kolkata. He has 9 years of experience in research, academics and administration. He holds a Masters in Technology in Computer Science Engineering. He is also pursuing his research for his Ph.D. and aims to help young learners from his own experiences.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“To be a guide and mentor with patient listening abilities”

We provide great learning to the students. We focus on subjects like java, advanced java, data structure, etc for the students. Our College offers semester wise learning to the students. There are a total of 6 semesters for the students. First-year includes overall subjects for all the students. During the second year, after the second semester, if a student wants to learn Computer Science then he/she can take up computer science and move forward. 

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“Providing academic support during difficult times is essential”

We follow a strategic approach to develop relations with the students. We encourage personal interaction with the students. We are always available in case a student is in an emergency situation. In the case of internal exams (2 per semester), if any student has poor results, we personally look into the matter and give our best to resolve the issues. In case a student is unable to take any of the internal exams, we do offer them assistance. We provide another chance so that they can improve their performance.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Internships and training at renowned companies with help of collaborations”

During the final year, students are sent for industry training. We do offer them internships in different software companies. I personally take up projects on web development. This way, after passing out, the students would be able to perform. We also teach them how to make a resume that is of industry standard. The placement process is guided by us so that they excel in interviews, group discussions, etc.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students?

“Enhancing skills both academic and technical for better career opportunities”

My department offers constant support and care to the students which help them cross hurdles of life. We also assist in developing and upgrading the skills of the students. We offer software-based learning, industry exposure, group discussions, interview training, etc. This helps groom the students with the necessary skills and learning.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and Placements?

“Students must focus on gaining industrial experience before opting higher education”

I personally believe that if a student has completed course study and is getting a good job, then he/she must go for it and catch the ropes of corporate life. Having gained work experience, he/she may choose what is good for the career. They may opt for a higher degree so as to upgrade themselves and contribute effectively to the organization and society at large.

How do you help your student thrive in the tough academic world?

“By coaching them in latest topics such as AI, ML and enhancing soft skills”

We do emphasize courses which are very much relevant in the market in the current situation. Courses like python, java, are very much focused upon by our faculties for the students. We also lay emphasis on Artificial Intelligence which is the need of the hour. We connect different courses and make students ready for the corporate market. We guide students to skill themselves in areas of quantitative aptitude, reasoning and English.

What are the challenges you are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

“Immense need of dynamic and modern lab equipment and software”

There are obviously challenges in every field. I face some challenges in terms of the laboratory facilities provided to me to teach the students. We did place requirements for advanced machines for the better learning of our students. Also, it is very much important for people to learn how to communicate with the management. This is the basis of the corporate work culture. AutoCAD software is really important for the students to learn about automobiles.
