Prof Sanjay Agal is working as Principal and professor at Dr V R Godhania College of Engineering and Technology, Porbandar, Gujarat. He has received his PhD degree in Computer Engineering from Pacific University, Udaipur in 2016 and bachelors from engineering college kota. Having spent a considerable amount of time in the education sector, he goes on to explain what fascinates him about the sector. Also, he shares his views in the events occurring in his day-to-day life. Read here to know more about him through his interview.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Education is a rare combination of intellectual challenge, creativity, and creating a positive change daily”

An important reason to become a part of this education system is the opportunity to nurture the critical, curious, and courageous minds we will need to navigate our way through complex futures. I must admit a personal benefit of imparting education is to grow as an individual and experiment with what I am passionate about. We get exposed to a diverse set of people and ideas which expand our mind.

In the life of an academician, no two days are the same.

Most job seekers cringe at the idea of having to do the exact same things every day. The great thing about being an academician is that it offers a lot of variety. Each year, you get in touch with new sets of students with varying characters, experiences, and ideas. One can incorporate new topics, upgrade the teaching style, and design new lessons to spruce and liven up the classroom.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example”

Each person's idea of leadership is different. My thoughts on leadership have grown over time and helped me shape my philosophy of leadership. What has worked perfectly for me is the philosophy of leading by example—the ability to effect change, taking the initiative, and encouraging others.

I believe each component is a working part of the broader framework of the institution. I don't feel the geographical boundaries of an institution limit the thought process of its visionary. I find myself aiming to shape a vision of academic success for all the students.

As a pacesetter, I focus less on having others establish goals and more on serving as a good example. To put this leadership style into action, I set and work towards improving goals for myself, such as regularly acquiring new skills, increasing productivity, and developing new knowledge about education best practices.

“We understand the importance of communicating with community members and working towards building community which is collaborative in nature.”

What do you think should be the College’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Our aim is to impart education to empower people to work towards a sustainable future”

  1. When studying in colleges, students are not aware about workplace expectations. Hence awareness is to be created by exposing them to a real-time workplace. Considering the evolving nature of industry and changes in the labour market, it has become imperative to ascertain how best the academic curriculum can address various requirements and demands of the dynamic industry.
  2. Up-skilling the faculty: Apart from only focusing on the curriculum structure, we find it imperative to provide the right exposure and training to the faculty in the field of Research and development. This will help ensure that the faculty is in line with the current industrial trends.
  3. We are planning to start short duration programs on upcoming technologies. Like Big Database, Cloud computing, IOT etc. This will help students to upgrade themselves as per current demand.
  4. We aim to make our students highly active members of professional associations and make the students join these professional associations, which proves to be a win-win situation for students because while they are networking with professionals, they are being praised for taking the initiative to learn more about their field of interest.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Students should believe in themselves and trust the process for the path they have taken”

  • A certification should not be your deciding criteria. Instead, you should look out for getting access to learning as much as you can. It will help enhance your skills in numerous ways and help you stand out among the crowd. Focus on developing innovative mindsets and look out how you can help solve a problem with your skills.
  • Identify your niche; this will help you climb maximum heights. Once you know the reason for what you want to do, the path will become simple and interesting.
  • Trust the process. Don’t think that success will come to you in a day. It takes time for everything to happen. Success is always a process, never an event. Failure is always an event, never a person - Manolis Votsis
