IIT Dharwad is situated close to the main highway on the outskirts of the city of Dharwad in the state of Karnataka. The institute was established by the Indian Government's Ministry of Human Resource Development under the direction of IIT Bombay. The label "Institute of National Importance" has been conferred to the Indian Institute of Technology in Dharwad. The Water and Land Management Institute campus, which is near the Dharwad bench of the High Court of Belur, is where the modern IIT Dharwad campus is located.

Parsec: The inaugural IIT Dharwad Technology Festival, titled A Paradigm Shift, aims to unite the extraordinary experience of outstanding technologists and the natural curiosity of enthusiastic students by offering a single venue for showcasing their expertise and honing their talents.

IIT Dharwad Library

The institution library's collection comprises print, research books, and reference books, among other things. Departmental laboratories are available at the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad to give students with hands-on experience and learning. The library of IIT Dharwad is well-stocked with information resources. The IIT Dharwad library has about 200 books and access to research journals.

IIT Dharwad's sports team has competed in the Inter IIT Sports Meet since its formation, winning its first medal in para-power lifting in 2018. IIT Dharwad sent a strong contingent of 87 athletes to the Inter IIT Sports Meet, which was held in December 2019 at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bhubaneswar. Additionally, IIT Dharwad competed in the 2019 Inter IIT Staff Sports Meet.

During this pandemic, the IIT Dharwad Physical Education division has been engaging students by offering online fitness classes to all students and organizing virtual fitness events.

IIT Dharwad's transit campus offers adequate sports infrastructure. Table tennis tables, carrom boards, and chess boards are available in all hostels. Athletics field, Cricket field, Football field, Hockey field, Basketball court, Tennis court, Two Volleyball courts, Board room game, Weight lifting room, and a well-equipped Gym with a part-time Gym Instructor are all available at the Institute.
