Prof Debangshu Chatterjee is currently working as HOD Animation at iLead College, Kolkata. With a rich experience of 16 years in the Animation Industry, he started his career as a 2D classical animator, working in various international and national projects. He is a great leader and educationist helping students motivate and learn this creative profession with his outstanding teaching and experience.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Teaching, Research and Inspiration for all”

Primary duties of faculty include effective classroom teaching, academic advising and counselling of students. As a HOD, I do organize and participate in departmental committee work and other activities related to the department. Continuous development of the curriculum through assessment, applied research or scholarly activities are my responsibilities towards students. 

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Industry relevant practices and schedules”

Practical knowledge can often lead to a deeper understanding of a concept through the act of personal experience. Theoretical learning is what the knowledge is about and the practical application is how the knowledge learnt needs to be implemented in certain real-life situations. Live projects, industry relevant assignments and appropriate internships are key approaches towards practical learning. 

What best practices are offered by the department to help students gain necessary skills?

“Through teaching-learning perspectives with subject outlines”

Our best practices include creativity and imagination, patience and attention to detail. We offer innovative designing and drawing skills through various tools and techniques to help learn students and fairly use their skills. Computer literacy and familiarity with relevant software, Active Learning and Concept Mapping are our way forward for teaching students with the best knowledge and concern.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education?

“Providing larger view of learning and practising”

Our department prepares the students for higher education and further studies by creating a stellar portfolio for them that they can subsequently use in the future. We also provide demo reels to them so that they learn and use it subsequently. Also, we believe in practical experience and thus we strive to provide our students with a variety of work experience through internships and training. 

How do you help your student to cope up with the high competition outside?

“A comprehensive and more positive mindset”

In order to help our students cope with increasing competition in the real world, we always hope to accentuate the positive attitude they have towards everything related to studies and life. We provide them with encouragement at every step. We always try to maintain and show them a positive mind frame so that they have confidence and belief in themselves, their education and skill.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students?

“Mistakes are meant to learn great things”

The one thing I would like to tell my students and the youth of today in general is that they should never be afraid of making mistakes in life. If at all they feel they have made any, they should just own them so that eventually they can rectify their mistakes and move onwards in life. Also, in order to enhance their strengths, I believe they must indulge in more research in animation film making subjects.
