Prof.(Dr.) Neeraj Kumar is working as Professor & Head in Mechanical Engineering Department & also heading Civil Engineering Department at Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur. He is an alumnus of MNIT, Jaipur & M.B.M Jodhpur. He has 17 years experience of in teaching & industry. 13 Ph.D. Research scholars & 15 M.Tech students have been awarded degrees under his guidance and currently, 8 Ph.D. Research Scholars are under his supervision. He has guided more than 30 B.Tech student projects in the area of manufacturing, material science, optimization, automobile, etc. He has published more than 125 International & National research papers including 2 SCI and 40 Scopus. He also published 1 patent, 2 Book Chapters, and 4 books. His specialization includes Manufacturing System Engineering & Optimization Techniques.
Being Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, What is your responsibility towards the department, faculty and students? How do you train the faculties to deliver this program?
As a Head of the Department, my responsibilities are to lead, monitor and manage the overall day-to-day operations of the department. I always motivate faculties & students to undertake research and get them involved in industry-oriented projects & skill-enhancement programs. Along with this, we take care of the development and growth of faculties by providing them with an essential faculty development program, workshop, short-term training program, etc. to train our faculties and upgrade their skill sets in line with the technological changes in the Industry.
What are the activities and curricular approaches your department offers which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?
The department regularly involves students in a practical learning environment where theory classes are closer to practical. We organize skill development programs, Mock interviews, industrial visits for practical learning, Industrial Mentor’s talk, Expert lectures, Industrial Visits, Seminars, Conferences, Workshops & outsourced training programs because we believe in educating students beyond the curriculum and books.

What are the factors that make mechanical engineering the best for the students to opt for? What career option a student may seek after pursuing this program?
Mechanical engineering is best because it develops expertise in designing, analyzing and maintaining mechanical systems. It also emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and designing solutions to different challenges in the real world. Therefore, there are multiple career options available for fresher graduates in both private & public sectors in the domain of mechanical engineering like the automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, robotics and medical industries. Career opportunities offered by PSUs include ONGC, BHEL, SAIL, IOCL, ISRO, etc, Government Organizations like Indian railways, Indian Air Force, Custom Department RAS, RVUNL, Rajasthan Police, etc. Private organizations are also providing lots of career opportunities to mechanical engineers.
How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program? Provide us with some insights to internships, industrial visits, placement etc.
The department builds industry connections by adopting the industry-oriented approach in practicals as well as theory classes and the development of application-based projects. We provide Industrial Mentors to each student to help develop their understanding of industrial expectations from educational institutes. In addition to this, students are sent to various reputed Industries for internships, industrial training & industrial visits.
What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
Our students are working on a number of projects like a robotic arm, 3 D printer, a Waste Plastic Pyrolysis Plant, a Cooling Tower, CAD Design, a Stir Casting Machine, development of composite material, spot welding, abrasive jet machine, etc.

With many students graduating from engineering every year, what would you like to advise them for the future and their career in Engineering?
I would like to advise students to focus on practical learning with industry-oriented projects, get involved in application-based research, try to publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations at International Conferences. Keep upgrading skills by involvement in industrial training, workshops, conferences, Technical Fests Competitions, etc.
