Dr. Purnima Gupta, Principal, Deen Dayal Rustagi College of Education has more than 17 years of experience in teaching in Teacher Education Institutes and 7 years at the school level. She has published more than 20 research papers in Journals and conferences of repute. Her areas of interest are Language Education, Educational Research, and ICT in Education. She has also authored a book on ESL Instruction at Secondary Level.
What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
“The satisfaction acquired by shaping so many lives in the profession of education”
The satisfaction I acquire in this profession is most satisfying than any other profession. As a teacher, I have a great influence over young minds and can mold them in the right direction so that they can be responsible and productive citizens and can lead the nation forward. The experience of mentoring young would-be-teachers gives me immense joy and satisfaction. Education is an area where this contribution of ours increases manifolds, as each teacher we influence, in turn, influences hundreds of young minds.
What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
“Democratic leadership to enhance the potential of the team by motivating them with good leadership”
I pursue Democratic leadership to provide each member with participation in decision making for a better settlement of institutional goals. The leader should be a nurturer and a motivator. He/she should be a team player. Enriching teamwork always comes best with participative leadership. I give my entire faculty feel responsible for the fulfillment of the objectives of the college. Leadership is all about inspiring people to realize their potential, to motivate them to put forth their best effort to achieve their objectives.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are?
“To direct, lead and coordinate for improving what we aim and maintaining what we acquire”
My responsibilities include paving the right direction of careers for the students of my institute, to maintain a great atmosphere of learning and great coordination between our team of faculties and students. The focus is on creating an environment that promotes the improvement of teaching and learning for students and the faculty and leads to their holistic development. My role is to provide strategic direction, leadership, and coordination.

The biggest challenge is the lack of emphasis on creativity and innovation. The other challenges are a rigid curriculum and the absence of employer engagement in course content and skills development. At Deen Dayal Rustagi College of Education, we have initiated various programs that focus on learning outcomes; faculty development to improve teaching; increased integration between research and teaching; better links between industry and institute to ensure skill development.
