Mr Samir Ghosh is the Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department in Netaji Subhash Engineering College Kolkata, West Bengal. He has an experience spanning 18 years. His research area is Implementation of Design of Experiment (DOE) technique for optimization of process parameters for biomaterials processing and fabrication. He aims to provide the best biomedical engineering education to all his aspiring students.

What is your philosophy of leadership? 

“I would describe my leadership style as direct and leading by example”

Being the head of the department, I always try to build up trust, respect and empathy. Creating professional coordination is my prime objective. I always try to understand the students' needs and accordingly I discuss with my colleagues to provide the solution. I enjoy challenging tasks and taking the lead role to improve the overall departmental quality. I also like to stay involved and inspire my entire team.


What are your responsibilities towards the students of this College?

“Ensuring ethical and relevant education to build a strong future for the student”

I have been continuously adapting to the latest industry-driven knowledge and skills for our students. The industry-based curriculum of our Biomedical Engineering program equips our students to face challenges in core areas such as manufacturing and servicing of medical equipment systems, instrumentation and control systems in the health care unit. We always arrange many industrial visits, internship programs, and hands-on training for our students. Overall, I am responsible for providing academic support to my students.

Every 5 years, the syllabus is critically reviewed. By taking feedback from all stakeholders, the curriculum is modified accordingly. Upcoming technology related topics and real time industry project based issues are incorporated in the curriculum.


How does the curriculum of your department ensure the best practice of the industry?

“By incorporating practical sessions, training, projects and Industrial collaborations”

A biomedical engineer can provide technological solutions to the medical field allied industry. Hence, during the four year program, students are taught all relevant subjects in their curriculum. They get opportunities for doing industrial training, industry-oriented project work and also an internship in renowned companies. We ensure theoretical knowledge as well as practical readiness of our students.


Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Soft skill and aptitude skill enhancement program, group discussions, and technical skill development programs”

The department has taken many initiatives to improve student quality and industry readiness. The department offers various hands-on training in the form of Value Added Training (VAT), workshop, inter-department and inter-institute competitive technical fest, etc. The Central placement of college organizes various events like Coding, Mock test, Mock interview, technical session by industry experts and many upcoming technology related sessions.
