AMU has decided to opt-out of the common entrance test that will be conducted from the upcoming academic year for admission to Central universities in the country. The university officials said, asserting that it will maintain the status-quo on its admission policy as the case on its minority status is sub-judice.

Shafey Kidwai, AMU spokesperson said, “We are pursuing a case in the Supreme Court against an Allahabad High Court judgement rejecting minority status to AMU. The Court has granted status quo to AMU and the university will maintain the status quo on its admission policy as the case of minority status is sub-judice.”

Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia, another University whose minority status is also sub-judice, is yet to take a decision regarding CUET.

AMU to Continue with its Own Entrance Test for 2022-23 Session

Nazim Hussain Jafri, Registrar at the university said, “Minority institutions like ours have some reserved seats and we don’t know how they will get affected with the common entrance test. A committee has been constituted to take a decision in this regard.”

A proposal regarding CUET was forwarded to the Aligarh Muslim University’s academic council. “The council members have decided to continue with the existing admission policy till the case is sub-judice. It means AMU will conduct its own admission test like previous academic years, Article 30 of the constitution grants us that right,” he further added.

Hence as per the policies of AMU UG Admission 2022, selection will be done as usual in two ways: the Departmental Admission Test (conducted at Aligarh) and Entrance Exam (conducted at designated centres).

The Union Ministry of Education had earlier announced that it will conduct a Central Universities Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to all UG and PG courses from the 2022-23 academic session.

CUCET Must for UG Admission in Central Universities from 2022

The CUET, which is integral to National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, was scheduled to start from the academic year 2021-22. Later the government put it on hold in view of the challenges caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Several universities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, have already decided that their admissions will be through CUET, however, AMU has decided to not participate in the Common Entrance Test.

The Ministry will publish the official notification regarding the common entrance test soon on its official website. The computerised entrance test will be conducted in 13 different languages by the National Testing Agency. The common entrance is likely to be held in June-July, 2022 by the conducting body, NTA.
