- The subject of the Bachelor's degree in Buddhist and South Asian Studies is the cultural and intellectual history of South Asia, especially India, and Tibet from the beginnings to the modern age, with a particular focus on religions and literatures. Knowledge about the teaching, spread and history of Buddhism and / or knowledge about other Indian religions, eg about Jainism, as well as about the literatures of India and Tibet are imparted.
- Great emphasis is placed on thorough language training in the relevant source languages Sanskrit, Classical Tibetan or a modern Indian language. Sanskrit and / or classical Tibetan serve as source languages for the Buddhist studies, for the South Asian studies Sanskrit and / or Urdu / Hindi (for the exemplary study of North Indian literature) and / or Kannada (for the exemplary study of South Indian literature).
- Students who choose a modern Indian language as their first language and who want to start the advanced master's degree in Religion and Philosophy in Asia after completing their bachelor's degree are expected to learn Sanskrit as a second language from the third semester - either as part of the main subject or as part of the Minor subjects: language, literature and culture as well as antiquity and the Orient.
