The program conveys analytical skills in the scientific treatment of archaeological findings and pictorial works, especially visual competencies and a conscience for the medial characteristics of historical sources. The program aims to convey in-depth knowledge of the material and pictorial tradition of the ancient Mediterranean cultures as well as knowledge of their contacts with neighboring cultures.
The Göttingen Master's program “Classical Archaeology” is characterized by its emphasis on cultural-scientific issues. Concentration is placed on the methodical, reflected connection of the practical archaeological analysis of exemplary findings and a contextual emphasis on historical syntheses formation. Students will acquire skills enabling them to critically receive historical explanation models, independently develop syntheses of complex historical and social issues, and adequately render these.

The semester fees comprise administration fees, student body fees, and a Student union fee. The summer semester fee totals $476.54 for 2021. While the Winter semester fee totals $470.43 for 2021. So the yearly fee for attending this program is $946.97.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- B.A. degree or equivalent degree
- Verification is required for
- Academic achievement in Ancient Civilizations (Ancient History, Pre and Early History, Classical Philology, Egyptology, Ancient Oriental Studies, Late Classic Period) or Cultural Sciences (Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology) totaling at least 60 credit, including knowledge in the field of Classic Archaeology totaling 40 credits, or
- Academic achievement in Image Studies (Art History) or History of Architecture totaling at least 60 credits, including at least 40 credits in the field of Classical Archaeology.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Reading skills in modern foreign languages (English, French, Italian) are recommended.
- Evidence of Latinum ('Kleines Latinum') and Graecum (4 C) must be submitted by admission to the master's thesis.
- Special language requirements for admission to the Single Honours MA comprising 78 C (Double Degree): Sufficient Italian language skills on level B1 of the CEFR (verification required by the end of the first semester of study at the latest).
- If a student is not a native German speaker, they must demonstrate sufficient German language skills on level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Student can demonstrate these skills by the successful completion of
- the DSH-exam (at least DSH-2) or
- the TestDaF (at least 4XTDN4) or
- the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 or
- the telc C1 Hochschule.
International students hailing from non-English speaking countries can prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
