Master of Arts [M.A] (Prehistory and early history)
Field of Study:
This course is unique because the knowledge and skills acquired in an archaeological BA course are deepened by setting individual priorities in the area of prehistoric cultures. Strong professional experience with cooperating institutions contributes to training on a scientific level.
This course offers a specialization in the following areas:
- Knowledge of places and monuments of prehistoric cultures
- independent development and reflection of current scientific positions
- Problems of prehistoric epochs and their material transmission
- Conditions of origin, functional, social, and cultural-historical contexts as well as the intentions of the artifacts
- Genres, media, functions, techniques, contexts, forms, and styles
- Consolidation of cultural-historical contexts using the example of ancient cultures
- archaeological occupational fields (ground monument preservation)

Tuition Fees
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) does not charge tuition fees. The students must only pay a semester contribution fee of about $401 per semester. This fee includes free use of public transport in North-Rhine Westphalia, and reduced prices for food and beverages in the cafeteria (Mensa) and canteens.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A Bachelor or comparable degree in the following disciplines: archaeological, historical, and several cultural studies subjects
- The language requirements of the BA “Archaeological Sciences” apply. Subject or those who change study must provide evidence of this by the time they register for the exam:
- For the study of archaeological sciences/prehistory and early history, knowledge of three is required foreign languages required.
- In the B.A. phase, proof of knowledge of Latin and at least two modern foreign languages, one of which should be English, plus one other scientific language relevant to the subject.
- Proof of modern languages is provided by corresponding school reports, module certificates (at least two modules) in the optional area, or language certificates in courses.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Most of the courses at the RUB are held in German. Students must therefore have sufficient knowledge of German and provide evidence by obtaining one of the following language certificates:
- TestDaF with at least 16 points within an examination
- DSH (level 2 or 3)
- German Language Diploma - DSD - II
- ZOP or Goethe Certificate C2 from the Goethe Institute
- KDS or GDS from the Goethe Institute
- ÖSD language diploma C1
- telc German C1 Hochschule
- Assessment test (examination part German)
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
