KEAM 2023 Detailed Exam Pattern
KEAM 2023 Question Paper consists of 2 papers- Paper I and Paper II scheduled to be conducted on 2 consecutive days.
- Mode of Examination: KEAM 2023 is conducted in an Online mode by the Commissioner of Entrance Examination (CEE), Kerala. For marking the answer in the KEAM Answer sheet, Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) system is used. KEAM Aspirants must know how to mark the answers in the OMR sheet. In case the candidates mark the answer incorrectly in the OMR Sheet, it may lead to negative marking in the entrance examination.
- Level of Examination: KEAM 2023 is conducted for admission in Institutes/Colleges operating in the state of Kerala. Qualified candidates will have a chance for admission into various government and private institutes available in the state of Kerala. Thus, it is a state-level examination.
- Question Type: The entrance examination consists of objective-type questions. Candidates will get multiple choices for marking the answer to a particular question. Candidates need to choose one correct option out of all the options available for answering. Read the features of KEAM Question type below:
- Number of options: Each question in KEAM 2023 contains five options in total. Out of these five options, candidates need to mark one option on the OMR sheet.
- Number of correct options: Out of these options, only one option is correct. Aspirants need to mark only one option on the OMR sheet.
- Paper in Exam: Commissioner of Entrance Examination (CEE), Kerala has divided the KEAM examination for engineering admission into two papers, and candidates are required to appear for both the papers compiled in KEAM 2023. Papers in KEAM 2023 are categorized as Paper 1 and Paper 2. A total of three subjects are divided into these two papers. The three sections in the paper are divided as follows:
- Paper 1- Physics and Chemistry
- Paper 2- Mathematics
- Number of Questions and marks per section: As candidates already know that the exam is divided into two papers. Candidates are required to answer questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The number of questions and marks has been divided among these three sections or the two papers of KEAM. Check the table given below containing the distribution of marks and questions among both the papers of KEAM.
Paper | Subject | Time allotted | Total questions | Total marks | Type of questions |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Paper I | Physics/Chemistry | 150 minutes | 120 | 480 | Objective (MCQ) |
Paper II | Mathematics | 150 minutes | 120 | 480 | Objective (MCQ) |
Total | 240 | 960 | - |
- Duration of Exam: The entrance examination is conducted for two papers, both the papers are conducted on separate days. However, identical to marks and question distribution, the time duration of both the papers is also the same. Both Paper 1 as well as Paper 2 are conducted within 150 minutes or two and a half hours each. Candidates need to answer all 120 questions compiled in one paper within this time frame.
- Difficulty Level: The difficulty standard of the exam is that of higher secondary standards of equivalent examinations, set by CEE Kerala. The syllabus for all the sections is similar to the higher secondary syllabus. In order to prepare well for the exam, candidates must know the exam pattern and syllabus for that particular exam.
KEAM 2023 Marking Scheme
Aspirants must know the marking scheme in order to decide how to attempt the questions in the entrance exam.
- 4 marks will be awarded to candidates for marking every accurate answer.
- A penalty will be charged for marking incorrect or wrong answers i.e. negative marking is applicable. 1 mark will be deducted from the total score.
- No mark will be deducted from the score of the aspirant for leaving a question blank or failure in attempting it.
- The marking of two options on the OMR sheet will be considered a wrong answer and a penalty of -1 will be charged accordingly.
KEAM 2023 Qualifying Marks
- In order to qualify for the engineering exam and have their names on the merit list, a minimum of 10 marks in each of the papers is required.
- Candidates who do not score the minimum stipulated marks will not qualify and hence will not be short-listed for admission to the respective course.
- It should also be noted that applicants who fail to answer even a single question in each paper will automatically be disqualified and declared ineligible for further rounds of admission.
- Applicants belonging to the reserved category (SC/ ST) will be exempted from the said rule and there will be no minimum requirement of marks in the KEAM entrance test for such candidates.
KEAM 2023 Tie-Breaking Procedure
In case of a tie between the scores of two or more candidates, the following criteria will be applied to select the candidate with the higher rank:
- A candidate with higher marks in Mathematics in KEAM 2023 will be given preference.
- If the tie persists, candidates who score more in Physics will be given preference.
- If still there is a tie, then candidates with higher standardized marks in Mathematics in the 12th standard will be ranked higher.
- If still there is a tie, then higher standardized marks in Physics during 12th standard examinations will be considered.
- When none of the above options work, then age will be used to break the tie. The candidate who is older in age will be ranked higher.
