What does a combat engineer do?

In combat conditions, combat engineers perform a range of military engineering, tunnel and mining, and construction and demolition tasks. They manually or, using highly specialized vehicles, conduct demolitions and clear mines. A combat engineer is also usually trained as an infantryman, and combat engineering units often combat with or as a secondary mission with infantry.

Some of the other works that are done by combat engineers are as follows-

  • Construction and breaching of trenches, tank traps, and other obstacles and fortifications are common combat engineer missions
  • Obstacle emplacement and bunker construction, route clearance and reconnaissance, bridge and road construction or destruction, land mine emplacement and clearance, and combined arms breaching.

Steps to follow to become a Combat Engineer

Students should decide at their school level whether to become a combat engineer. In high school, students, together with physics and chemistry, should pursue mathematics regularly. Preparations for entry must also begin immediately after the 10+2 examination has been taken. The following are further steps to becoming a combat engineer:

Decision Making

Decisions have to be made at the secondary level. An engineer needs to focus on topics at the school level, such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. Students must also register at coaching centers and begin to prepare for the entry exams.

Subject Choices

Students should always choose science topics to pursue a career in engineering. The main subject choices should be physics, chemistry and mathematics. Students wishing to become combat engineers should follow information regarding the military and their physical requirements and should take care of the same.

Entrance Exam Preparation

Once the entry exams for universities and colleges have been successfully cleared, students are able to enroll in an engineering school to graduate with an engineering degree. The entry exams for engineering applicants are conducted, such as JEE Main, JEE Advance, DTU, KIT, VITEEE and BITSAT, etc. Aside from that, if you are already interested in becoming a combat engineer, you can begin preparing for qualifying exams such as the SSB, NDA, AFCAT, TES, NCC, INET, and AOC.

Selecting Correct Colleges

Students should always pursue an engineering degree at a prestigious university. For an engineering course, IITs and NITs are regarded as primary colleges. If you have a high All India rank, you will get a seat at one of these leading institutes to take engineering courses. Or, you can also choose from the multiple military colleges available in India.

Steps after Graduation

After completing your graduation in engineering, you can apply for the SSB examination. Please make sure you score more than 85%. After passing your SSB exam, you will be subjected to a medical comprehensive test to determine your overall health and whether you are qualified to be a combat engineer.

After Qualifying Exam

After your medical test, if you get selected, you will be sent to a training program. After completing your training program, it will be up to you to decide which service/arm you want to join out of the three.

Types of Combat Engineers

There are different ways to join a unit of combat engineers, depending on which type of service you choose. There are opportunities for technical engineers, aeronautical engineers, naval architecture, and general services.

  • Combat Engineer in Air Force: Interested candidates can be an engineer in the Air Force based on their qualification for different branches. You can join the technical branch & aeronautical branch (mechanical & electronics) through AFCAT, if you are a graduate and have studied physics, chemistry and mathematics since graduation. An advertisement is published in newspapers if there’s a vacancy and you can check the same on the official website. The salary for this post range between INR 17 lakh per annum to 18 lakh per annum
  • Combat Engineer in Navy: You can join the navy as either a naval architecture officer or a general service officer. You are eligible to opt for one of these options if you have a bachelor’s degree in engineering with at least 60% marks and have cleared the CDSE, INET or NDA (naval academy/navy) exams. Although these exams are conducted every year, you can still check the recruitment status on the official website or look for advertisements for the same. Expected salary for the post in this department is between INR 7 lakh per annum to 8 lakh per annum.
  • Combat Engineer in Army: To be a combat engineer in the army, you are required to clear one of the two qualifying exams, either NDA or TES. NDA is held twice a year to fill vacancies and is announced on the official website, in newspapers, or in the employment section of any media outlet. As for TES, it also takes place twice a year, but to apply for TES, you need to have at least 70%+ in physics, chemistry & mathematics in your 10+2. A combat engineer gets paid somewhere between INR 5 lakh per annum to 6 lakh per annum.
