ACCA is a certification provided Association of Chartered Certified Accountants that judge the capability of an accountant based on 13 Papers. Students will various educational qualifications get exempted from some of these papers. 

Students also have the option of not giving certain papers when they have enough work experience. Students who have completed their Bachelor's degree in Commerce will be exempted from 3 papers, thus the students will sit for 9 ACCA papers. Students with MCom also get the same benefit.

Students who have completed CA IPCC (Both Groups) will have to attempt 8 papers. Students who have become a CA will sit for 4 ACCA papers. 

What are ACCA Exemptions?

ACCA makes exceptions for Commerce graduates, Post Graduate (M.Com) Inter CA students, and CA qualifiers. A student who has just passed the Class 12 exam does not meet the above criteria but is eligible to register for her ACCA exam through the Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) route.

*Applicants must have passed five subjects, including English and Math/Accounting, with a minimum score of 65% in at least two subjects and a minimum score of 50% in the remaining subjects.

** A CA finalist is eligible for an additional waiver if they scored 40 or above if they’ve scored 40 and above marks in their examination for relevant subjects.

How to Apply for ACCA exemptions?

There are two ways to request an ACCA exam exception. Candidates will have to submit inquiries for claiming exemptions during their registration on the ACCA website. Alternatively, they can email documents to ACCA.

Who is Eligible for ACCA Exemptions? How to Claim these Exemptions?

Students can apply for up to nine waivers from their Knowledge Level Paper or Skill Level Paper based on their previous qualifications. Generally, the exemptions that certain individuals can claim are:

  • Graduates: Students who have completed their graduation in the field of commerce, may be eligible for exemptions from anywhere between one to four papers, depending on the subjects they studied. 
  • Inter-CA Pursuant: Inter-CA pursuant/candidate who has given their IPCC exams and cleared certain papers is eligible to get 5 exemptions from ACCA, whereas those who have completed B.Com with IPCC may be eligible for 6 exemptions.
  • Final CA Cleared: Students who have completed their CA qualification or are eligible for exemptions from all the papers, i.e. 9 papers. 
  • Other Qualifications: Students who have completed their US CPA are eligible to get 8 exemptions in ACCA. Those who have completed CMA from India with 5 years of relevant work experience will be eligible for 9 exemptions whereas those who have completed CMA from the USA are eligible for 3 exemptions.

What are the benefits of these exemptions?

ACCA rigorously analyzes a candidate's qualifications before giving an exception to the candidate. If a student qualifies for a particular exemption but has not studied the subject in question for some time, it is recommended that they should take the papers anyway to refresh their knowledge of the subject. 

Ideal for candidates who have recently completed certain qualifications such as Graduation, Inter-CA, CA. Candidates can save time studying for these papers, which they can otherwise use to study for the rest of the exams. It also helps in saving money on coaching and helps in getting ACCA qualification a few months early.

When can you not claim an exemption despite being eligible?

If a candidate's work experience is not related to the fields of finance and accounting, or if the qualification was obtained from a university or educational institution not recognized by ACCA, those qualifications are exempt from the exemptions. 

What are the ACCA Exemption fees?

Students may be eligible for an ACCA knowledge and skills test waiver but must pay for the waiver they claim. The ACCA charges a fixed fee per paper that claimed exemption from. The exemption fee for Applied Knowledge Level exams is GBP 86 GBP per paper and the exemption fee for Applied Skill exams is 114 GBP per paper.
