The college offers dental courses of BDS, MDS at UG and PG level. Additionally, it also offers diploma and doctoral courses. The college was established in 1953. However, the institute got its present name in 1992. Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.

Candidates applying for BDS course should have obtained not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Botany and Zoology taken together at the HSC. For SC/ST candidates 10% relaxation is provided in eligibility criteria.
Selection to the BDS course is through NEET UG entrance exam. Merit list will be declared by Selection Committee of Tamil Nadu Government. NEET-UG will be conducted by CBSE for admission in MBBS and BDS courses. The NEET-UG will be conducted on May 7.
Admission to two diploma courses is based on merit of Class X.

Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital offers MDS course in eight disciplines, candidates applying to these courses should have done BDS from a recognized university and should have done one-year compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI).
Selection to the course is based on NEET PG entrance exam. 50% of the total seats are reserved under all India Quota; rest seats are available under state quota. However, admission to seats under both quotas is through NEET PG only.
