Alagappa Government Polytechnic College was started in the year 1955 at Karaikudi by Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar, a renowned industrialist and philanthropist, with an aim to provide quality education to students and keep them at par with the growing field of technology. Later in the year 1966, the Government of Tamilnadu undertook the college.
The college has received its approval from the All India Council of Technical Education(AICTE).
The college offers a variety of diploma courses Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering
Apart from that there are part-time diploma courses available, which can be attended from 6.00pm to 9.00 pm.

Alagappa Government Polytechnic College Admissions
Students who have passed 10th board exams or any equivalent examination, can apply for diploma courses in this college.
The selection will be done on the basis of merit. There is no age restriction to join the Diploma Courses with effect from the academic year 2004 - 2005.
Special Reservation is being given to the following category for admission in Alagappa Government Polytechnic College:

How to apply ?
- The Students are admitted on the basis of their 10th board examination marks. (SSLC board). However, students can also apply after completing their 12th boards, for such students 12 seats are reserved.
- After the results are declared, one can take the admissions by filling the Application form through the online portal.
- Fill in the Name, age, Address , phone no. and other details
- Upload the required documents.
Following documents need to uploaded for admission process:

- Birth certificate
- Aadhar card
- Passport size photographs
- Caste certificate (if under reservation criteria)
- Click on submit and wait for the merit list to be uploaded on the official website of the college.
- If you are selected then you need to visit the college for verification of documents.
- After which you have to confirm your seat by paying the first year fees.

The cut off marks for the Department of Basic Engineering, First year diploma 2020 – 2021 was 175 marks.

The placement opportunities from the college are very good.
- Compared to last year there was a 4% rise in the placement for Students from the department of civil engineering. However out of the 56 students who took admission only 5 of them got placement.
- The placement of the students having completed Diploma in Electrical and electronics engineering is very good.
- 75% of students got placed. (40 students out of 60 got placed)
- There was a whopping 53% rise in the placements when compared to those of last years.
- The placement of the students having completed Diploma in Electronics and Communication engineering is average .As only 43% of the students got placed.
- Although as compared to previous years placements, there was a rise by 24%.
- The placement of the students having completed Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is the best out of all.
- As 50 students out of 56 got placed. With a rise in 38% of placements as compared to previous year.
