BCA or Bachelor of Computer Application is a 3-year undergraduate program in computer applications which is often seen as equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech. in Computer Science. BCA course is open for students who have qualified Higher Secondary Examination with a minimum of 45% marks. The course is usually divided into six semesters and admission to the same is generally done through Common Entrance Test conducted by respective institutes.
The average tuition fee for BCA Course in India ranges from INR 1.5 Lacs to 6 Lacs for three years and average monthly salary offered to any BCA graduate ranges between INR 20,000 to 25,000
BCA course focuses on preparing students for roles pertaining to Computer Applications and IT industry and helps a student develop programming skills, networking skills and learn application packages, programming languages and modern techniques of Information technology. After completing BCA, a student has numerous career options to choose from. Some colleges prefer students from Science stream or those who have studied Mathematics and Computer Science at 10+2 level.
For admission to BCA course, a student must fulfill the basic eligibility criteria as mentioned above. Admission to regular BCA course is generally done through a common entrance test conducted by respective universities. IPU-CET, SET are a few entrance tests conducted by some top institutes for providing admission to the course.
Application process for BCA entrance test usually starts in the month of May and June. Students have to apply to respective institutes in both online as well as offline modes.
BCA entrance test is generally of objective type and contains questions from the topics mentioned below.
The difficulty level is easy to moderate and questions in the test paper are of 10+2 level. The number of questions varies from 150-200 and the duration of the test is generally between 2- 2½ hours.

The selection for admission to BCA is generally based on the performance in the written test. Certain universities like the Christ University, Bangalore, also conduct a personal interview for selection to the program. The final selection is based on the cumulative performance in written test, personal interview and qualifying examination. There are certain colleges like BIT Mesra, Amity University etc. which take admission purely on the basis of marks scored in the 10+2 examination.
Certain institutes allow lateral entry to candidates in the second year of the program. For lateral entry, a student must have passed 10+2 and have done a computer course of minimum 6 months duration. Students with a three year diploma in IT from State Board of Technical Education are also eligible for lateral entry to BCA program. After completion of BCA degree, there are several options available for students in India. After BCA, candidates have an obvious choice of an MCA degree which is a postgraduate degree in Computer Applications. Another good option is Master’s Degree in Computer Management (MCM) or Master’s Degree in Information Management (MIM).
