The University of British Columbia was my absolute top choice for three reasons. 1. They offered me a substantial scholarship that would cover 40 percent of my entire international student tuition fee. 2. Sauder School of Business at UBC offers an amazing business Co-op Program, having companies like Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Sony come to campus. Pursuing co-op would allow me to graduate with a year of work experience and possibly a pre-placement offer from such firms. 3. UBC is known for having an extremely diverse student body alongside recruiting amazing, top of their field faculties.

Course Curriculum

8

The courses at Sauder UBC are extremely up to date as they primarily involve numerous case studies in multinational corporations as well as small businesses around the world. They also feature guest speakers involving industry professionals along with small businesses in and around Vancouver. We have been given case studies within which we have had to call the businesses and/or visit the firms to get a better understanding of the business.

Exams

For my application, I had to submit my Curriculum Vitae and 3 Letters of Recommendation. In my CV I highlighted my academics and my several community service initiatives and volunteering opportunities. I highlighted my stand up career and my research paper in Chemistry. I took my Letters of Recommendation from my Chemistry and Physics professors as I had worked quite closely with them for individual projects and my research paper and the third from the CEO of the company I had worked for in Germany. I asked him to highlight my proposals that he planned on implementing for creating a time-efficient and cost savings production process. Yes, I had two rounds of online interviews. It was a test of my critical thinking skills and creativity. They presented me with situations and I had 120 seconds to come up with an answer and how I would respond in such a situation. My suggestion would be to brush up on your general knowledge facts alongside practicing problem-solving skills.

Faculty

8

The faculty to student ratio at UBC is 7:13. Some of the professors were amazing people who gave engaging lectures that make you look forward to class and want to learn the material. And they genuinely care about the students' wellbeing. They ask about our day, invite us to be open, and to approach them with any questions or doubts on our mind, personal or academic. Certain professors have taken the extra step and have asked groups of students to join them for coffee or grab a meal to be able to communicate in an open and relaxed atmosphere. However, at the same time, there are professors who are not as relaxed and open to communication. There are professors who just teach the material and want to be done with the class, they do ask us to come to office hours, however, even during office hours, they are curt and give the impression that they want us to leave them as soon as possible. This does not go for all the professors, just a select few. Conor Topley is one of the best professors at Sauder. He is extremely passionate and charismatic. He makes a student want to attend class and listen to him. He provides insights with his own personal work experiences. He regularly keeps his office hours open and engaging and is more than happy to meet you for a cup of coffee outside class hours. His style of teaching helped me understand concepts clearly as well as implement them in my daily life.
