Studying at University

I came from Ukraine so the price is a good reason to choose TRU. It is cheaper than most Canadian major universities but still, it offers a lot of programs and activities. That fact that I had really good grades in school helps me still in studying and I did not have any problems with getting in a course.

Course Curriculum :

The faculty is making a huge work making the course curriculum but again it depends on the teacher of a course. Usually, it is good because professors make it together. You can have some Midterms and tests. Then it is easier to get prepared for an exam.

Exams :

My IELTS was 6.0 and I was supposed to go for studying into the ESL program (English as a Second Language). Thankfully, my teachers told me that I don't need their courses as well as I already know all the material so I went directly into university courses. TRU offers English Exam for people like me during International orientation so you can go and check your knowledge.

Placement :

TRU has its own career and advanced learning centre. They can help to find a job after graduation. Also, we have Co-op programs and all information can be found on its website as well. Everything including average pay on co-op programs depends on your degree. For example, for Science, it is from 17$/h. TRU has Job Fair every March. You can go there dressed accordingly and with your resume and have an interview right there.

Internship :

There are jobs on campus but it is really tough to get one. You can apply at the campus activity centre during its hours but it is a really small chance that they will call you. Students are not leaving the jobs because there is no limit for working hours on campus.

Events :

There are a lot of events that are going on through the academic year. the most popular is Back To School BBQ, our sport teams games and International Days every March. We also have a LEAP and shortly these people take care of excursions and trip around Kamloops and the surrounding area. Their prices are really low and that's nice.

Fees :

For international students, 1 semester (4 courses) is close to 8 000 CAN$ depending on your program and additional fees like gym, bus or newspaper. There are some scholarships available for international students. You can apply once a year. You can search for a scholarship using our university service. Some of them can be for a specific program or something like this.

Scholarship :

Thanks to my grades from high school. I had got an entrance scholarship (1000$). The application was done by my international advisor during my application so I did not need to do anything.

Examination Structure :

It depends on the course and a teacher. We have our exam schedule around a month before but there is a possibility that you will not have an exam at all. For example, if you have some big Research paper during the course or some play or photography project at the end of some of the Art courses.

Faculty :

The average number of students in a class is 31. Most of the programming classes have assistances as well as chemistry and physics labs. Most of the professors are always prepared for a class. It is better to ask students that have already taken the course or use Rate My Professor website. Most of them are pretty nice and helpful but sometimes a teacher can be not interested in teaching at all.

Hostel :

First few months I lived with a family. It's called a homestay program. At TRU it costs 825$, including internet, water, electricity, food, laundry. the advantage of this is that families can take you somewhere with them as well as you're counted as a part of the family. Later I stayed in 2 different university residences. I think McGill Housing is a little overpriced. You need to pay almost 700$ for a small room with a lot of stuff inside. Every 4 dorms have a common bathroom but all of them have their own door outside.
