Sneha Beniwal Review at The University Of British Columbia [UBC], Vancouver | Collegedunia

A students guide to life at UBC.

I chose this university because of a number of reasons. First of all, it's one of the top five universities in Canada every year. I also got to know that it is good for studying psychology in which I always wanted to major in. Lastly, Canada has a lot of Indian students. Henceforth, knowing that I won't have a lot of adjustment problems in UBC was a plus.

Course Curriculum :

The course syllabus at UBC seems to be quite relevant. We are given the opportunity to do work learn program at UBC. Students can also do work through careers online (a website by UBC where you can find work - even related to your majors).

Exams :

UBC requires an official paper record of IELTS. My IELTS Score was 7.5. UBC does not accept an individual score below 6 in any categories of IELTS such as reading, listening, speaking or writing. UBC also requires your 11th grade score, 12th grade predicted score and 12th grade final score.

Placement :

You can learn alongside professionals in psychology or faculty of arts and make important contacts through UBC’s work programs, work-study programs, research opportunities, and co-op terms. You have the opportunity to do: 1. Work Study which is working part-time while you study is a great way to earn extra cash, meet new people, and get professional experience. 2. Work Learn which is an employment program offered on the Vancouver campus that helps you develop professional skills and earn a paycheque while you complete your studies. 3. Co-op education. With co-op, you can combine your studies with full-time, paid work experience in a variety of fields. 4. Undergraduate research. If you’re looking for research experience in an academic setting, you should consider applying for an Undergraduate Student Research Award for the chance to work on one of your UBC professors’ research projects..

Events :

UBC has a broad range of recreational, social and cultural activities, there’s plenty of opportunity to do what you love or master something new. UBC hosts a variety of events for students such as Halloween parties, Imagine day for freshers, etc. Moreover, you have the opportunity to choose from over 350 clubs. You just have to sign up for the club you are interested in online or in-person on the clubs day. You also have the opportunity to find like-minded friends through intramural sports, lunchtime yoga or campus-wide events like the Great Trek. Moreover, you can be a part of sororities and frats in your university to be more social.

Faculty :

I am in the faculty of Arts. My faculty has a wide range of programs that you can choose to pursue. There are some courses like BMS (bachelors of media studies) which have below 50 students in one class. Some classes at UBC have about 200 students in one class and some have 90 students. The faculty to student ratio generally depends on the instructor and course you're choosing. The faculty seems quite generous and most of them encourage student teacher interaction one-on-one by keeping separate office hours for students who are facing any problems in the course or just want to talk and they reply to your emails regularly. For me, Lillian May, an instructor in the psyc 302 infancy course is someone who left an incredible impact on me. I loved the way she taught us. She added alot of personal elements while teaching, for eg, introducting her own infant daughter and showing the class her videos to illustrate some concepts in infant Psychology.

Hostel :

If you're a first year student, its best to live on campus.Even though UBC has a housing option available for every year which is great. There are 3 first-year residence areas at UBC: Totem Park, Orchard Commons, and Place Vanier. The largest first-year residence, Totem Park has 9 mixed-gender houses. The tallest first-year residence, Orchard Commons has 2 mixed-gender houses. The closest first-year residence to the beach, Place Vanier has 10 mixed-gender houses, 2 single-gender houses. Staying on campus makes it easier for you to make friends and be more involved in the activities happening on campus.
