Emily Review at University Of Kansas [KU], Lawrence | Collegedunia

Living at KU

E
8.3 /10

I wanted to stay in-state because of family and costs. KU is the only university with a medical school as I was pre-med. They also have one of the highest ranking honors programs. They have the Pell Grant advantage, which covers most of my tuition and fees. The campus is beautiful and Lawrence is a great college town.

Course Curriculum :

It is challenging but helpful. Courses really depend on the professors as they can make or break a course. The French courses and Pre-med courses are the most difficult I have taken. KU requires students to complete core goal courses which round a student's education.

Exams :

I did not take SAT, GRE, or IELTS. I took the ACT, the English Advanced Placement test, and KU's French placement test.

Placement :

There are on-campus job opportunities. Most of them are clerical work. To get a job that pertains to your major requires you to network and have experience beforehand. The center for career development is very helpful as they can revise your resume, practice interviews, and provide connections to low-cost business wear.

Internship :

You can get an outside internship and receive general or specific college credit for it. You can talk with advisors and professors to get an internship. There are even programs to intern abroad. It is more common to find unpaid internships but if you are an upperclassman or graduate student, there are well-paying internships.

Events :

There are many events throughout the school year through many different clubs and organizations on-campus. On of my favorite general events is HawkWeek at the beginning of the Fall semester. It has a lot of free food, shirts, activities, music, and games. It is a great way to be eased back to school and reconnect with friends.

Fees :

KU has tuition depending on the number of credit hours you are taking. There are charges for violations of parking and university property. Typically, if you have an overdue amount on your account then the University will put a hold on your account prohibiting you from enrolling in classes next semester.

Scholarship :

I receive multiple scholarships from my university, mostly because of my FAFSA. I receive the Pell grant from the government and the pell grant advantage from KU. I also receive a thousand dollar scholarship because of my ACT score. Just file FAFSA on time, keep good grades, and accept the scholarships in your account on enrolling and pay.

Examination Structure :

Exams at KU vary with the course and professor. For example, most of my psychology courses have multiple choice exams or papers. However, my French courses are more written and verbal. Most exam take a class period or are scheduled at a later time to be taken if it takes a couple of hours. Exams are typically fair at KU. Spring semester has less exams than fall semester due to scheduling. Final exams are at the end of the semester.

Faculty :

The faculty at my college depend on the individual. I will say that I am very impressed with the faculty in the psychology department. They can serve as mentors and be a great connection for outside opportunities.

Hostel :

I live off-campus which is significantly cheaper and more independent than on-campus. For example, one has to have a meal plan if they are a first-year student living in the dorms. While it can be a pain to get to class some days, it is better paying low rent and making your own meals.
