It was affordable and had a very good chemical engineering program. I originally planned to get my masters in biomedical engineering after I finished, so this program led to that very well. I liked the people I met in Las Cruces, and the head of the department was very helpful.

Course Curriculum

10

It was challenging, but useful. There was a bit too much Aspen Plus in the coursework for my taste, but it would be useful if you plan to go into the oil industry. I really didn't want to work in oil and gas, so I felt that it was a waste of my time.

Exams

ACT - 27. I also took a math placement test so that I could take calculus in my first semester. I think I got a near perfect score on most sections of that.

There are a lot of job opportunities coming out of my major. I was able to get a job right away, and many of my classmates were, as well. The head of the department also helps to bring companies to the school and keeps a job board on our website.

Internship

I was able to do summer research at my school. I also was able to get a grant for my last year that provided funding for my research. I was paid $10 per hour for both the school year and the summers.

Events

10

We always had a Halloween party, and there were many fun events hosted by the department club, AIChE. We also had a white elephant party for Christmas, and end of the year parties. This was one of the most active departments in the school!

Fees

There was an engineering fee, and a fee to be apart of the club. The engineering fee covered equipment costs and computer maintenance. The club fee covered a t-shirt and the food for each meeting during the year.

Scholarship

I did have a scholarship for most of my time at school. It was called the Lottery Scholarship and was provided to New Mexico residents if they had decent grades.

Examination Structure

It changed depending on the class, but usually, there were at least a final and a midterm in each class, and a few quizzes in between. Some classes in chemistry had a lot more tests, which was helpful since there is so much to remember!

Faculty

9

Everyone was really nice and personable. I was able to get to know my professors and do research, which a lot of students in other schools don't get to do. I know many of my professors personally and still try to keep in touch with them.

Hostel

I lived on campus for my first year. It was fine, but I had to share a room with one other person and use a communal bathroom. There were other options, but they often fill up quickly. I chose to live in an apartment near my school for the rest of my time there.
