The university's most diverse pool of early decision applicants to date, with record numbers of first-generation college students, students from low-income families, and students of colour, demonstrates Brown's ongoing desire to make a Brown education more accessible to students from all socioeconomic and geographic perspectives.
Accepted early decision students represent 47 countries, 43 US states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. China, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Brazil, and Singapore are the top nations represented outside of the United States. Explore: 2022 Admission Requirements at Brown University
When compared to the Class of 2025, total applications through the early decision program, which is for prospective students who have expressed a commitment to attend Brown if admitted, increased by 11%.
This is the fourth year in a row that applications have climbed, a trend that corresponds with the debut of The Brown Promise program, which began in the 2018-19 academic year and replaced loans with scholarship monies in all University-packaged undergraduate financial aid packages.
Dean of Admission Logan Powell said, “We are inspired by the incredible resilience and breadth of knowledge and talent shown by our early decision applicants, especially in a year marked by such challenge and uncertainty. From among them, we are humbled to welcome a cohort who is sure to make a positive impact at Brown and well beyond for years to come, building from their own unique perspectives and lived experiences.”
Powell stated that one of the characteristics that stood out most about the admitted students was a determination to reunite with others to solve problems and more deeply engage in their communities — largely in response to the impact of COVID-19 on their high school experience, in which remote learning, time spent away from family and friends, and health and financial struggles were realities for many.
57% of this year's diverse batch of accepted early decision students asked for financial assistance, and 17% will be the first in their family to attend college. Students of colour account for 51% of the entire cohort, defined as individuals who self-identify as Black, Latinx, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, or Asian – a 3% rise from the previous year.
