ICT Mumbai: 2 Answered Questions

Why is ICT, Mumbai not converted to IIEST whereas other colleges like CUSAT are?

Uzma ZarinStudied at Cochin University of Science and Technology (2019)

CUSAT has yet to receive an IIEST upgrade. The work is still on, and funds have been allocated to strengthen the infrastructure in the next few years. Being an ex-student of the college, I'm not sure when it'll be upgraded.

  • Many people at the college, as far as I know, do not want it to be upgraded to an IIEST.
  • There's a lot of politics involved there.
  • Also not sure why certain people at the institute don't want to take advantage of it because being an IIEST has a lot of advantages.

To answer your question, despite being an excellent college, the Ananda Krishnan committee has not recommended ICT Mumbai for conversion to an IIEST. Let me give you a list of potential causes:

  • It is a modest institute in terms of campus size (16 acres), however, there is a need for more space for future expansion.
  • This is one of IIEST's requirements (a lot of space for further improvement of infrastructure and expansion).
  • Standard engineering courses such as CSE, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Metallurgy, and Mining are not offered.
  • The institute is known for Chemical Engineering.

The institute offers Bachelor’s degrees in B. Pharma, Food Engineering and Technology, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Polymer Engineering and Technology, Surface Coating Technology, Oils, Oleochemicals and Surfactants Technology, etc.

Surface coating:

  • The Average package was noted to be 4.8 Lakhs.

  • Companies like Asian Paints, Cipla, DSM SOFT, Galaxy Surfactants, Jacobs, and Nerolac, etc visit the campus.

Polymers:

  • The average package was noted to be between 2.5 to 3 Lakhs.

  • Not many companies visit the campus and therefore students opt for off-campus placement.

Fibers:

  • Companies like Sterlite Technologies Limited, Himachal Futuristic Communications Ltd., etc visit the campus.

  • The majority of students opt for Higher studies and there are no such placement stats present.

These are the career opportunities offered for the branches. However, you should choose the course you are more passionate about.
