The programme details of this course are provided by:School of Geography and Geosciences: The School of Geography & Geosciences is an interdisciplinary community structured into two departments: Earth & Environmental Sciences and Geography & Sustainable Development, both offering several degree options. The School's mission is to promote world-class teaching and research across a broad spectrum of Geography and Geosciences. The Department of Geography & Sustainable Development is a leading centre for geographical scholarship. It integrates the study of the earth system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is part of a rich and ongoing tradition of research aimed at understanding our planet. Our teaching is research-led and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) our research was judged to be 'internationally excellent'.
Distinctive features of this course
Within the degree programme you will engage with a number of specialist topics including for example, geological field mapping; igneous and metamorphic petrology; tectonics and geodynamics; geological processes and landscape evolution; a geological traverse of the Italian-Swiss Alps; and applications of Geographical Information Systems. The programme includes: (a) an area of study that encompasses all aspects of Earth science, and emphasises the long-term behaviour of the Earth over geological timescales; (b) a blending of the theory and techniques of geology, geophysics and geochemistry to understand the nature, rates and durations of Earth's surface, near-surface and internal processes, and also their interactions with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere; (c) a rigorous training in the techniques, approaches and methods across the range of geological and physical Earth sciences, with a particular emphasis on field and laboratory skills; (d) a degree that takes full advantage of the superb geological setting of Scotland for training and the development of knowledge; and (e) a degree that prepares students for immediate entry to geoscience professions.
