The programme details of this course are provided by:School of Geography and Geosciences: The School of Geography & Geosciences is an interdisciplinary community structured into two departments: Earth & Environmental Sciences and Geography & Sustainable Development, both offering several degree options. The School's mission is to promote world-class teaching and research across a broad spectrum of Geography and Geosciences. The Department of Geography & Sustainable Development is a leading centre for geographical scholarship. It integrates the study of the earth system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is part of a rich and ongoing tradition of research aimed at understanding our planet. Our teaching is research-led and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) our research was judged to be 'internationally excellent'.School of History: The School of History is composed of over forty full-time members of academic staff researching and teaching on European, American and Asian history from the dawn of the Middle Ages to the present day. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), 60% of the publications submitted by the staff in the School of History were judged to be Ôworld leadingÕ or Ôinternationally excellentÕ. The School of History prides itself on small group teaching and tutorials allowing for in-depth study and supervision tailored to secure the best from each of our students.
Distinctive features of this course
As a Joint Honours degree student you will have the opportunity of an integrated study of the earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments, combining the natural and social sciences through fieldwork, laboratory and classroom approaches alongside history in chronological depth. There is a wide variety of topics for you to pursue including cultural, health, population and urban geographies; environmental management; oceans, weather and climate; and fluvial, glacial and quaternary environments, example British cinema history, modern Iranian history or environmental history. It may be possible to spend a semester or year studying abroad as part of this degree programme.
