The MSc in at Birkbeck, University of London is open to graduates of various social science disciplines, and provides a multidisciplinary platform from which to engage with the complexity of contemporary debates and challenges around crime and its control. It will appeal to those with a keen interest in security, crime and criminal justice, as well as those seeking to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the core issues facing criminal justice in the twenty-first century. It will also appeal to those who desire advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary criminological theory and cutting-edge research methods, as well as those who wish to pursue a substantial, original research project of their own design (through the research project component).
As part of the core provision on the programme, students will learn about and critically engage with the most widely used contemporary criminological theories and approaches. This includes those which seek to explain crime and criminality in ways that are straightforward and useful for policy makers and practitioners, and those which seek to explicate the dramatic changes to criminal justice and the crime control apparatus over the past few decades. Students will also be instructed in a wide range of research methods, and will be able to choose from an extensive list of nearly 30 option modules to complete their degree.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students must a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to get admission to this program.
- Students require a minimum GPA of 3 on a 4.0 scale for the program.
- Students should have a second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in the humanities, social sciences or law.
Indian Student Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Students need to submit minimum GRE exam scores for a better chance of admission.
- Students are reviewed on their individual merits and professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively.
- Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

If students are not from the UK and they do not already have residency here, students may need to apply for a visa.
The visa students apply for varies according to the length of students course:
- Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
- Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa
International students who require a Student visa should apply for their full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If students are living in the UK on a Student visa, they will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
