Many of college students are involved in data analysis, the interpretation of statistics, the optimal design and control of systems, and the modelling and prediction of time-dependent phenomena. The Applied Statistics programme at Birkbeck, University of London covers both the theory and the application of modern statistical and mathematical modelling techniques to applied problems in industry, public services, commerce and research. It proceeds from a strong theoretical background, but it is practically oriented to develop students ability to tackle new and non-standard problems confidently. The mutual dependence of practice and theory is emphasised throughout the course.

All students are initially registered on the MSc Applied Statistics. After a common first year of core modules in theoretical and applied statistics, the second year allows students to orient their programme of studies towards students own particular interests and career objectives.
