This Philosophy programme at Birkbeck, University of London gives students the opportunity to interact with renowned philosophers covering broad areas of the discipline and to undertake their own research in an internationally excellent, research-intensive department. This MRes is ideal for self-motivated, committed students who already have a good philosophy qualification and wish to progress to pure research in some area of the subject.
The course will give students a firm philosophical grounding and mastery of complex, specialised areas of philosophical study, enabling students to engage critically and reflectively with current philosophical debates. Students will also be equipped with the essential research skills they need to proceed to PhD research. Students will complete a substantial supervised research project in a shorter time than that required for a PhD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students must a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to get admission to this program.
- Students require a minimum GPA of 3 on a 4.0 scale for the program.
- Students should have a second-class honours degree (2:1) in philosophy or equivalent, or an MA in philosophy at Merit level or above, and a sample of written work prior to interview, in addition to a research proposal of up to 1000 words.
Indian Student Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Students need to submit minimum GRE exam scores for a better chance of admission.
- Students are reviewed on their individual merits and professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively.
- Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

If students are not from the UK and they do not already have residency here, students may need to apply for a visa.
The visa students apply for varies according to the length of students course:
- Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
- Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa
International students who require a Student visa should apply for their full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If students are living in the UK on a Student visa, they will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
