At The University of Hull studying the BSc Nursing (Mental Health) (Hons) has a strong experiential element to it, and also a clear focus on service user, carer and practitioner involvement. It will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality, evidence-based health care.
Through the academic dimension of the course, you will gain key, valuable theoretical skills which you will apply in a working environment. The placements you undertake on this course will teach you clinical practice skills which are supported by timetabled activities in a simulated environment. You will learn to use specialist skills, together with your own personal strengths to help people come to terms with their own problems.
Upon graduation, you will be awarded an academic and professional award enabling you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a qualified registered nurse.
Future Prospects
Upon qualifying, our students leave the Faculty and go on to pursue a wide range of career opportunities available for them.Ê100% of full-time students on this programme find employment or progress to further study within six months of finishing their course (Higher Education Statistics Agency 2017).
Some choose to specialise and many go onto community posts, management and leadership roles, practice education and even research.
Most of our students have been successful in finding employment either before graduation or within a short time after this. Many stay in the area but some have moved away to pursue successful mental health nursing careers in other parts of the UK, and in other countries such as Australia and New Zealand.
With an extensive portfolio of NHS-funded continuing professional development opportunities, students can expect to maintain their relationship with their Ôalma materÕ- all nurses need to be able to mentor the next generation of nurses so the mentorship in practice module is usually the first port of call. From there as qualified mental health nurses, they can study at Masters level using our flexible framework to undertake education in key areas of practice including leadership and advanced practice.
We also work with our NHS partners on more bespoke and specific development for staff and teams.
