Utsa Karmakar
University of Edinburgh, PhD in inflammation
Reviewed on Oct 6, 2020(Enrolled 2018)

My area of research interest was (and still is) immunology & inflammation focusing on auto-immune diseases. It is the department that I was drawn to.

Course Curriculum

8

It is Ph.D project which requires a lot of time, effort, understanding, and analytical as well as critical approach. It does not have a fixed syllabus. I have not had any industrial experience.

Exams

CV, SoP to different funding agencies, and scholarship programs to secure international funding. I was a co-applicant in my Ph.D project, so I had to conceptualize the project as well. Yes. I had an informal interview with my current supervisor and an official interview with the people (read selection committee) in the department. The main thing that one needs to do is to show motivation and passion to do research.

Placement

8

There is no direct visit to the companies in our department per se. However, there are network opportunities and career fairs.

Events

I like everything around here but I must say I spend a lot of time inside the research facility; also my campus is in the outskirts of the city, so cannot really comment on the other student events.

Fees

?20k/year

Scholarship

Yes, 108K three-year Ph.D scholarship from Versus arthritis UK. Edinburgh global research scholarship 16K/year. I had to write a Ph.D project grant application with my supervisor.

Faculty

7

1:5 in terms of the supervisor to Ph.D students ratio. They are nice and approachable.

Hostel

7

No. I privately rented an apartment at the beginning of my study which was shared. The average rental is around 400-500/month including bills.
