Warwick university ranks within the top 5 universities for economics in the UK. Additionally, faculty economic research publications are top notch - this was a major motivation behind my application.

Course Curriculum

The academics at Warwick exposes you to a career in economics research. There’s a lot of faculty who have experience in microeconomics. If your interest lies in microeconomics, Warwick is really one of the best places to be, in the U.K. The syllabus is updated annually, taking into account all the relevant trends in economics.

Exams

IELTs score, 7.5. Minimum of 7 was required at the time on my application. I did upload my GRE score, though this was not a minimum requirement. My GRE score was 162 Quant and 162 Verbal.

Placement

We do not have placement drives in the U.K. Instead there are campus fairs (beginning from the month of October) which introduce you to the various companies that are open to hiring Warwick grads. Make sure you look presentable on the day of a job fair. You get to network with alumni who work for these companies. While networking ask crucial questions such as 1. Does your company sponsor international candidates ? 2. What is your application process, what are things I should keep in mind, and 3. How has your experience been working for this particular company ? What’s the nature of your work ?. I really enjoyed some of the prospects of economic consulting companies in the U.K. I’d also gone till the final rounds for a couple of those economic consulting firms. My interview process was however stalled or delayed due to the onset of Covid at the time. So I wouldn’t be able to give a fair account of my placement experience.

Prof Omer Moav, who taught us growth theory - made an indelible mark on my student life. I enjoyed attending his lectures and solving his growth model problem sets. His class was more like a performance, it had you hooked right from the start!. I vividly remember the entire class giving him an applause on the final day of his lecture.

Campus Life

Campus life was quite hectic due to the fast paced nature of my program. There are a plethora of clubs and societies you can join as a postgraduate student. There are also departmental game nights and a Christmas party where you get to socialise (and perhaps share a drink!) with your Professors. With regards to infrastructural facilities, I’d like to sheepishly admit that I spent most of my time at the library. This was more so when the winters became harsh. The library at Warwick is a world in itself. In addition to stocking books from a multitude of disciplines and languages, the library was also a place to network and grab a cup of coffee.

Hostel

My accomodation facility costed me 7000 pounds for an entire year. I’d chosen a en-suite bedroom with a shared kitchen. Please note that the prices tend to be high for renting and transportation. This is very much unlike how it is back home in India. I could not find accomodation within campus as mine was a late application. I stayed nearly 5 km outside campus. While I enjoyed my experience, I’d still encourage you to apply and accept your offer soon so that you get enough time to choose an on-campus accomodation. Staying on campus would be preferable, because you get to interact with friends - put in late nights at the library and soak in the campus experience much more.
