Achieving my goals at Aston University

NJ
7.2 /10

I liked the course and the program in Artificial Intelligence as the course modules are better than many top-ranked colleges in the UK, and there are a lot of interactive lectures, and guest lectures from industry professionals on topics that are not covered in our teaching modules. So this covers most of the aspects of AI and also Aston University is in the city center of Birmingham, 2nd largest city in the UK, with lots of new opportunities developing around here, and some Big 4 companies and IT companies shifting to Birmingham.

Course Curriculum :

The course syllabus is the most updated in AI, even though many new modules were added from last year's course, also depends on students' interest if you ask your, Lecturers, to include new topics, they are happy to include provided we have a basic understanding and interest in the topics. I have done some virtual internships from term 1 along with my studies which come on our careers portal. Doing some more work placements which are right now voluntary (not paid) due to the pandemic situation but it provides a good opportunity to work with people and start-ups in the industry.

Exams :

IELTS 6.5+, previous degree mark sheets, experience/references from college or workplace, statement of purpose (essay) on why you want to do the course, and how you plan your career ahead.

Placement :

Companies come to advertise their roles and you can apply for them, all processes happen online, and the interviews are as well. Post-study career options are promising and with the new Graduate route, it will become better. Students need to take responsibility for getting their own placements. There is excellent research opportunities for research student to opt for PhD course you get PhD applications 4 times in a year and can also apply for a 1 year Masters in Research.

Internship :

I did a few virtual internships which are the free ones that can be done along with the course. Also got some work placements at the university but it is voluntary (not paid).

Events :

There are 50+ clubs and societies. You can form a club if something isn't there. Events right now are virtual events that take place and will be better once the pandemic gets over. We have a student union building that is voted the best building in the UK by the Guardian - a building that inspires. We have a full-length football ground that can be used for pay and play. Other sports clubs, amenities, gym, swimming pools, etc. We are university sponsors for Aston Villa F.C. in the English Premier League. Students get privileged access to watch football matches at Villa Park. A lot of extracurricular activities are planned on normal days, but right now restricted due to the pandemic.

Fees :

GBP 21000 + additional for 10-month placement assistance where the university can provide an extended visa for 10 months.

Scholarship :

Not myself, but students do get nearly 20% of the fee as a scholarship.

Faculty :

Faculties are very qualified with huge research experience, many from the best universities in the UK & Europe. They are always approachable for any discussion, you can book appointments whenever they are available and talk to them on video calls. Faculty-student ratio in my course would be 1:15 Increases for courses when more students take the same module from other programs. For optional modules, the ratio decreases to 1:10 There are many lecturers who have left an incredible impact on me - Dr. Aniko Ekart, Dr. Maria Chli, Dr. George Vogiatzis, Dr. Peter Lewis, Dr. Ulysses Bernardet, Dr. Hai Wang, and many more.

Hostel :

I stay at the accommodation at the university campus which is nearly GBP 145 per week but cheaper options are also available going up to GBP 110 per week outside.
