• The Geography and Sport and Exercise Sciences course at the University of Chester offers a balanced coverage of physical and human geography with opportunities to specialise in a broad range of topics. It provides the opportunity for specialist degree training in aspects of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS); focuses on transferable, employment-related skills and knowledge; provides UK residential fieldwork alongside opportunities for overseas fieldwork; uses the latest technological innovations in classroom and fieldwork contexts; and offers a wide variety of assessment types.
• In recent years, the sports, recreation and leisure industries have shown continued growth. International success and the growing health agenda has ensured that investment and interest in sport and exercise in the UK continues to increase substantially.
• Therefore, the course is designed with two core principles in mind. Firstly, the development of knowledge, applied skills and analytical techniques in the conventional sub-disciplines of sport and exercise sciences. Secondly, the orientation of studies around vocational opportunities and practices, including PE, sports management, development, coaching, health promotion, leisure and recreation, as well as sport science support and sport and exercise sciences generally.

Job prospects

Those combined honours students pursuing a career in the sport and exercise employment sector often find the applied aspects of the degree most useful when it comes to gaining employment. Previous graduates work in professional sports clubs and organisations as sport science support staff, others have gone into health promotion, teaching amongst other areas.

Ensuring our graduates are trained in the skills employers want and need is central to the Geography programme. Student destinations have included consultancy, local government, teaching, NGOs, the water industry and many more. We use our extensive alumni network to further support our programme with guest lectures, work placements, careers events and more.
