Fresh morning with coffee

Can’t clear your head without your daily dose of morning coffee? It's no secret that most people associate mornings with the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Morning coffee is a must, be it, in the comfort of your own home or a quick trip to Starbucks before work. However, a new survey by dietitians and nutritionists has suggested that the early morning coffee may not be the best way to give your body a caffeine boost, if you want its effect to remain the entire day.

The reason you crave caffeine in the morning is to rid your body of grogginess. Although, taking your coffee early on in the day leaves you feeling hyperactive, its effect dies down as the hours go by. This is because, as you wake up your body produces an excess of ‘stress hormones’ or ‘cortisol’ which leaves you feeling anxious. Caffeine increases the production of these ‘stress hormones’.This gives you a ‘caffeine high’ represented by an extremely high level of energy. But this is actually detrimental to your health and will eventually tire you out towards the end of the day.

Author and dietitian Laura Cipullo backs this claim and tells CNBC Make It, “Definitely limit coffee when you first wake up...Have coffee when the body is producing less cortisol, about three to four hours after waking.” In other words, if you wake up at 8 a.m, have your coffee at around 11 a.m.

Certified nutritionist Lisa Lisiewski also has a similar thing to say, "I would say that mid-morning or early afternoon is probably the best time." So, in light of the new evidence, it is better that you shift your coffee drinking habits a bit later on in the day. It is better, therefore, that you transition to a mid-morning coffee to stay awake the entire day.

Furthermore, research has also suggested that it is healthier to skip Starbucks and make your own instant coffee. Healthline has published results which imply that instant coffee contains lesser caffeine and the same antioxidants as regular coffee, which makes it a healthier option to drink. So grab your sachet of Nescafe Instant Coffee, in any one of the several variants, and drink your ‘morning brew’ a little later on in the day.
