We all know, that we are getting short of breathe day by day. A major part of our country is choking under severe and hazardous air. In the past few days, our capital city witnessed an average AQI (Air Quality Index) of 407. No wonder till when we will be able to survive with this Air Quality Index?
Air, water, and land are the three basic necessities for humans and animals to survive. Can you imagine your life without any one of these? No, you can’t! We need air to breathe, water to drink and land to live on. Polluted air is costing us lives and what’s more adverse than this? But instead of blaming each other, if we start doing something then we might make a little difference to our current condition. Agree? We all need to stand together to do something for our environment.
Let’s look at some of the simple measures we can take to fight for our air.
Follow the 3 R’s: Reuse, Recycle and Reduce. This will reduce the manufacturing processes and thereby leading to less harmful emissions.
India is a country with intensively farmed lands, agriculture and this leads to ammonia and other harmful emissions. Livestock farming also emits high concentrations of methane and non-methane volatile organic compounds. In order to reduce this try eating organic food and less meat.
If you have a wood stove or fireplace in your house then make sure that it is well-maintained. Incomplete combustion often leads to the release of particulate matter of a very small size which is very harmful to our respiratory tracts.
Instead of using regular power you can go for using solar energy. This will save a ton of energy for you. Moreover, it will also save you money. Less energy usage leads to less fossil fuel burning and therefore less air pollution.
If you could find any initiative taken by the state or local government, then always look forward to making your contribution to it. This will help in making the air quality in and around your area better than it would have been otherwise.
Whenever you buy new electronic products for your home or office, always buy ENERGY STAR products. These products have to meet certain requirements for energy savings and this leads to less wastage of energy.
Instead of using private transport you can go for public transport. Drive less by combining trips, telecommuting, carpooling, or carsharing. This will help in reducing the pollution emitted by the vehicles you are driving.
Air conditioners need much more power than fans and this leads to a lot of wastage of energy. AC also releases harmful emissions which enhances air pollution. Therefore, use AC only when necessary.
Remember “Each One, Plant One” policy? We do need this right now! Trees around your house and in your neighborhood help reduce air pollutants significantly. If not trees, you can also go for the indoor plants which will act as a natural air purifier in your home.
Most of the air fresheners, paints, cleaners available in the market contain toxic substances that easily vaporize into the air creating air pollution. So, while purchasing household products for your home, opt for the cleanest and greenest products that are free from harmful chemicals.
Burning of leaves, old tyres or any items in the open leads to a lot of air pollution. Avoid doing that and report such incidents to helpline numbers and emails.
So, what are you waiting for? Start implementing these steps and improve the air quality around you.
