Whenever someone asks to mention the name of the world’s best female athletes the only name which comes first in our mind is none other than Mary Kom. A wife, a mother, and a world champion, she is really an inspiration for all the women out there.
Not only a credible figure in Indian Boxing, but she has also become the most successful boxer in the history of the marquee tournament. Recently, she has secured herself a Bronze medal at the World Women's Boxing Championship by defeating a spirited rival in Columbia’s Valencia Victoria. The southpaw from Manipur fetched a unanimous 5-0 verdict and thereby making it to the semi-finals of the event. This medal will add to her legend by joining six gold medals and a silver medal already there in her kitty.
Mary Kom has witnessed an amazing career studded with so many gems like five Asian titles, Gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, Olympic 2012 bronze medal and numerous other international laurels. This year also she has won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and President’s Cup in Indonesia.
Now, the 36-year old Mary has added one more gem to her crown by assuring her first medal in the 51 kg category by taking herself beyond Cuba’s Felix Savon (7 medals) and Ireland’s Katie Taylor (6 medals) as now she has secured 8 world championship medals for herself.
Mary’s huge reservoir of experience came in handy and she waited for her chances to defend Victoria. She swung her right arm masterfully to connect well-placed hooks and her straight punches were so effective to make her win in quarter-finals.
After winning the quarter-final, Mary said, “I am happy and I’m trying my best to win the highest medal for my country. I would give my best to enter the finals of the tournament”
"It was a good bout for me and I will now try to improve on this performance in the semifinals," she added.
Unfortunately, Mary lost to the second-seeded reigning European Championship and European Games Gold medalist Turk Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the semi-final on Saturday.
Apart from being a wonderful ambassador of the Boxing, Mary Kom is a member of Rajya Sabha and has also been the recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
Mary’s long list of accomplishments is definitely an inspiration for all of us.
