Launched on 15th August 1952, Cinthol has become a household name in India, being promoted over the years, by the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Virat Kohli. The name Cinthol is derived from the Synthetic Phenol, clubbed to stand for Synthol. Godrej modified the term Synthol by replacing the ‘S’ with a ‘C’, thus christening their new range of soaps, ‘Cinthol’.
Cinthol is the first soap product to be manufactured from fatty acids as a part of Burjor Godrej’s research project.
Burjor Godrej was in the process of completing his Ph.D. thesis in Germany when the World War II broke out. Consequently, he escaped to Paris and had to return years later to finish his thesis, which was on mechanisms of creating soap from fatty acids. During the 10 year long hiatus, due to the World War, Godrej implemented his knowledge to create the Cinthol soap.
During the centenary birthday celebration of Burjor Godrej in 2015, it was revealed that Burjor Godrej discovered that ‘germicidal’ soaps were also good deodorant soaps. Consequently, the very first Cinthol soap was launched in combination with deodorant hexachlorophene (G-11).
Cinthol was one of the first brands ever to realize the significance of ‘value-for-money’ in personal care products. They changed the marketing strategy and released promotional offers such as, Buy 3 Get 1 Free, which spiked up Cinthol sales.
It is interesting to note, that even after 66 years of the brand’s inception, Cinthol still evokes a significant amount of respect and confidence from its loyal consumers.
