John Kinghorn Scholarship in Engineering

John Kinghorn Scholarship is awarded to the students commencing a Master’s level program at the School of Engineering, University of Sussex. A tuition fee waiver of 13,215 USD is provided to the students under this scholarship program. Three students are selected for the John Kinghorn scholarships provided by the University of Sussex.

One scholarship is reserved for female applicants to encourage more female participation in STEM subjects. Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for the John Kinghorn Scholarship is based on the financial need of a candidate and a few other factors like the chosen degree, academic interest, etc. Eligible candidates must opt for a full-time master's programs at the University of Sussex:

  • MSc in 5G Mobile Communications and Intelligent Embedded Systems
  • 5G Mobile Communications and Intelligent Embedded Systems (with an industrial placement year) MSc
  • MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering
  • MSc in Digital Signal and Image Processing
  • MSc in Engineering Business Management
  • MSc in Robotics and Autonomous Systems
  • MSc in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (with a Masters industrial placement)
  • MSc in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (with an industrial placement year)

The first step to get the scholarship is to take admissions at the University of Sussex. The students who have already taken the benefit of any other Sussex scholarship like the Chancellor’s International Scholarship will be considered ineligible for the John Kinghorn Scholarship.


Application Process

To apply for the John Kinghorn Scholarship at the University of Sussex, all the candidates are required to follow the below-mentioned steps:

  1. Eligible candidates are supposed to complete the scholarship application form after receiving and accepting an offer of a place in any of the eligible master’s program.
  2. Once the scholarship office reviews the application, they will contact the candidate to announce the decision.
  3. If the candidate fails to meet the eligibility criteria, the application will not be considered in any case.
  4. If the candidate’s application is shortlisted for the scholarship, an anonymous version will be shared with the scholarship selection panel so that the deserving candidates get them in the final selection process.
  5. There will be strict monitoring as no identifying characteristics will be shared. However, the statement of academic interests will be shared in full.

To be considered for the scholarship, you will need to submit a personal statement.  The statement will be assessed on the following:

  • academic interests relating to your chosen degree
  • future career plans related to your chosen field of study
  • your entrepreneurial spirit and aspirations

Selection Process

The selection process takes place once the application is received by the university. The selection process takes a few weeks to get completed. Applications are assessed according to the statement of academic interests and the grades obtained up to date.

The selection panel will typically focus on the candidate’s academic interests related to the chosen degree. In addition to that, they also keep a check on future career plans of the candidates related to their chosen field of study.
