Putnam UMass Scholars Program

The Putnam UMass Scholars Program is awarded to academically outstanding students. This scholarship is awarded by the University of Massachusetts (UMass) to provide recognition and financial assistance to a sophomore, junior, or senior level student.

Established by alumni of UMass who work at Putnam Investments, this scholarship is applicable for Bachelors’ Degree and is available for all applicants currently pursuing undergraduate courses at the UMass campuses.

  • Eligible undergraduate students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Putnam UMass Scholars Program will provide recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding student at a sponsoring UMass campus.
  • This program receives one or more merit-based scholarships every year.

To be considered, recipients must be enrolled full time at UMass, be a matriculated sophomore, junior or senior during the particular academic year. This scholarship is available for all applicants currently pursuing undergraduate courses at the University Of Massachusetts

Eligibility Criteria

Putnam UMass Scholars Program is open to all residencies: In-state, Proximity/Regional, Out-of-state, and International. Other eligibility requirements are:

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course at one of the sponsoring UMass campuses - Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, or Lowell.
  • Must be a matriculated undergraduate student.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 3.0.

Application Process

  1. Fill in and submit an UMass admission form for a full-time UG course at one of the sponsoring campuses.
  2. Post enrollment, sign in with the same username & password they use to access the campus login portal.
  3. Select the general scholarship application after logging in.
  4. Complete the application form and submit via online portal
  5. Complete additional school/college-specific questions, based on their major(s).
  6. Applicants must attach the required documentation in PDF format.

Applicants, kindly visit the Presidential and Alumni Scholarships website and follow application instructions as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Documents Required

  • One letter of recommendation, uploaded by your named recommender (optional)
  • Updated resume
  • Current Transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  • A statement of purpose of a maximum of 500 words which must include:
    • What the applicant thinks has been their significant experiences beyond what may be reflected in their academic transcripts including:
      • Personal characteristics
      • Leadership experience they have had in any area of their life, such as school, work, athletics, family, volunteering, community
      • Obstacles they may have overcome, and
    • Applicant’s personal and career goals.

Selection Process

The Putnam UMass scholarship will provide recognition of and financial assistance to an outstanding student at a sponsoring UMass campus. The selection process will be conducted in the following manner:

  1. Students will be shortlisted based on academic performance
  2. Semifinalists will be called for an interview.
  3. Recipients will receive a confirmation email notification via the UMass email account.

The selected applicant students need to give permission to release personal information to the donors, based on which they will be awarded.
