Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

International students applying to graduate programs at the University of Amsterdam may apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS), which will award the recipients an amount anywhere between 2000 and 25,000 EUR.

University of Amsterdam instituted this award with the aim of encouraging international students to pursue their higher education in Amsterdam.

Eligibility Criteria

Only students from outside the EU/EEA (i.e. international students) can apply for the scholarship. The applicant must

  • have been admitted to a Masters program at UvA, or hold an unconditional offer to one.
  • pay overseas tuition fees at UvA.
  • not be a recipient of any other full coverage scholarship for the duration of this course.
  • not transfer the scholarship award to another year.

The scholarship is also only meant for graduate students, and other specific eligibility criteria would depend on the faculty or school whose program you are applying to.


Selection Process

The selection process is done by each individual school/faculty. The selection criteria may also vary, but it is generally understood that only students of outstanding academic merit are awarded the scholarship.The selected candidates must accept in writing the terms and conditions for the scholarship before the amount is transferred.


Grant Details

Since it is the various faculties/schools at UvA that are managing the scholarship, one must go through their specific details before applying:

  • Graduate School of Child Development and Education

    • The scholarship is applicable to students who are admitted to
      • Research Master’s programme Child Development and Education, or
      • Master's programme Pedagogical Sciences, track Youth at Risk
    • Students are selected based on their excellent academic record and motivation.
    • To apply, students must send an email to resma-cde-fmg@uva.nl, with a letter describing their motivation and budget plan.
    • The application must be done before 15 January 2022, and the selection will take place in June.
    • The recipient will be awarded around 2,000-12,000 EUR, but will still have to pay the full tuition fees.
  • Graduate School of Communication Science

    • The candidate must be admitted into the Research Master’s programme in Communication Science (1-year or 2-year), or hold an unconditional offer.
    • Selection focuses on your academic merit, and hence the following documents are required:
      • Proof of belonging to the top 10% of your class
      • Certificate grade transcript with GPA of at least 8 on 10
      • English language certifications (not older than 2 years) such as
        • TOEFL - internet test 100 (minimum score of 24 in each component)
        • IELTS - 7 (at least 7.0 in each component)
        • CAE Grade A, or CPE Grade O
      • Motivation letter explaining your reasons for applying to this program and how it will impact your future
      • CV
      • Letter of Recommendation from a dean, teacher or academic supervisor
      • Description of extracurricular activities
    • The candidate must submit the application via postal mail to The Graduate School of Communication, Admissions Office (C7.02), Postbus 15796 1001 NG Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
    • Make sure to submit your Master's application before 1 January in order to receive our questionnaire. Make sure you have all the required AMS documents (as written above) before 31 January.
  • Graduate School of Economics and Business

    • The applicant must have submitted an application to an MSc programme of Economics and Business.
    • To apply for the scholarship, students must submit:
      • Transcripts, with a GPA of at least 8 on 10
      • A motivation letter of about 300 words
      • CV
      • Letter of Recommendation from a dean, teacher or academic supervisor
      • Proof of English proficiency:
        • TOEFL IBT - overall score 100 (at least 22 in each component)
        • IELTS - overall 7 (minimum 6.0 in each component)
        • CAE or CPE of 190 points
      • GMAT or GRE results
    • The application must be submitted through an online form, before 15 January.
    • The scholarship is not a tuition fee waiver, but can be used by the student to pay fees.
    • The amount is equal to the tuition fee + 5,000 EUR additional allowance, and will be paid in 12 installments.
  • NOTE : OCTOBER 2022 SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE: For the academic year 2023-2024, there is one AMS scholarship for a (Research) Master’s student. There are no AMS scholarships available for Bachelor’s students this year.  
  • Graduate School of Humanities

  • The candidate must have applied to a Masters program (regular, dual or research) that does not require interviews.
  • For the academic year 2023-2024, there is one LLAMS available of €25,000.
  • While submitting the MyInfo application form for the Masters course, candidates must tick the option ‘apply for a scholarship’.
  • The scholarship application form must be submitted with the required format in Qualtrics. The following documents must be included:
    • Transcripts, with GPA comparable to
      • 3.7 in USA
      • First class degree in UK
      • Cum laude in Dutch system
    • Letter of Recommendation from a dean, teacher or academic supervisor, confirming that you scored in the top 10% in your class
    • Letter of motivation of upto 500 words, explaining the reasons for choosing the program and how it will impact your future
    • CV, with description of extracurricular activities
    • Proof of English proficiency (not older than 2 years):
      • TOEFL iBT - overall 95
      • IELTS - 7 (minimum of 6.0 in each component)
      • CAE, C1 - 190 score
  • The application must be submitted before 15 January 2023.
  • If you are selected for the LLAMS and conditionally accepted, you need to have handed in your certified documents (diploma or gradation statement, final transcripts) by 1 May 2023 at the latest.
  • Faculty of Law: Amsterdam Law School

    • The candidate must be provisionally admitted to an LLM program taught in English.
    • The candidate must submit a Scholarship Application Form and upload the following documents:
      • Transcripts, with GPA comparable to
        • 3.7 (USA)
        • First class honors/upper division (UK)
        • Cum laude (Dutch system)
      • Two LOR From academic supervisor
      • CV
      • Letter of motivation of a maximum of 500 words, explaining the reasons for choosing the programme and the importance of receiving the scholarship
      • Proof of English proficiency:
        • TOEFL - 100 iBT (minimum score of 24 in each component)
        • IELTS - 7 (minimum 6.0 in each component)
        • CAE or CPE with minimum grade B
      • The application form must be submitted here before January 15 .
      • The amount available for academic year 2023-2024 is yet to be announced.
  • Academic Medical Centre

    • The candidate must be admitted to a Masters program of Medical Informatics at AMC.
    • Candidates are selected on the basis of academic excellence and the quality of the letter of motivation.
    • Candidates must submit their scholarship application to the International Office. The following documents must be uploaded:
      • Letter of motivation of maximum 500 words, explaining the reasons for choosing the program and its relevance to your career
      • Letter of Recommendation from a dean, teacher or academic supervisor, confirming that you belong to the top 10% of your class
      • A description of extracurricular activities
    • Applications for an AMS scholarship for the Master’s program Medical Informatics should be submitted before June 1 (start in September) or November 1 (start in February).
    • The recipients will be awarded 4000 EUR or a proportional amount if you start the programme in February..
  • Graduate School of Psychology

    • The candidate must have an unconditional acceptance to a Masters track in Psychology or a Research Masters Psychology.
    • Candidates can apply for the scholarship along with the course application by ticking the box. These documents must be uploaded:
    • Proof of belonging to top 10% of your class (statement signed by board or dean)
      • Proof of English proficiency (not older than two years):
        • IELTS - 7 (minimum 6 in each component)
        • TOEFL - 100 iBT
        • C1 Advanced - minimum 190 score
      • Transcript with GPA of at least 8 on 10
    • The deadline for application is 1 March 2023,
    • Amount: To be announced. (Estimated amount for Psychology: scholarship will cover part of the tuition fee)
  • Faculty of Science

    • The candidate must be admitted to an MSc programme at UvA.
    • The candidate must have completed their previous degree not more than three years ago.
    • Candidates are judged on the quality of their application as well as that of their previous academic institution
    • The application for the scholarship can be done on the course application form itself, by ticking the relevant box. Candidates must submit:
      • Transcripts with GPA equivalent to
        • 3.5 (USA)
        • First class honours/ upper division (UK)
        • 8+ (Dutch system)
      • Letter of motivation of not more than 500 words, explaining the reason for choosing the program and its relevance to your career
      • CV, with description of extracurricular activities
      • Proof of English proficiency:
        • TOEFL - 100 (minimum 22 in each component)
        • IELTS - 7 (minimum 7 in each component)
        • CAE with grade A or B
        • CPE with C
      • Recipients are expected to get at least 40 ECTS in their first year to avail the scholarship for the second year, and are supposed to attend all classes and show good academic progress.
      • The deadline for application is 15 January 2023.
      • Recipients will be awarded Amount: Equal to tuition fee
  • Graduate School of Social Sciences

    • Candidates must be admitted unconditionally to an English-taught Masters program at the school.
    • Candidates must not have had to complete a preparatory program, except for the Summer School Programme Comprehensive Introduction to Research Methodology and Design.
    • Recipients are expected to gain at least 80% credits in their first year to continue availing the scholarship in the second year.
    • All valid documents like test scores must be submitted on the Masters program application form. These documents are to be submitted in the Scholarship Application Form:
      • Scan of identity page of passport
      • Letter of motivation
      • Financial plan
    • The deadline for application is 13 January 2023, and the selections will take place in March.
    • The scholarship amount will be equivalent to the tuition fee, but it is not a fee waiver. The scholarship amount will be paid in monthly installments.

In all cases, recipients of the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship will be notified before the start of their program, but they may not receive the full scholarship amount in one installment, and hence students must arrange to pay the full tuition fee by other means.
