University of Bradford Sanctuary Scholarships

University of Bradford Sanctuary Scholarships are provided to those students who have left their home country as a political refugee and are either seeking asylum or already granted refugee status. The University of Bradford grants this scholarship to enable those people to participate in higher education as they are not so fortunate financially.

Benefits granted:

Students who will be eligible for this scholarship will be provided with:

  • Tuition fee-remitted place at the university until that time approaches when they are awarded status that entitles them to access student finance (if at all).
  • Travel and course cost of £4000 (per year if applicable).
  • Support the students to identify and overcome barriers so that they can excel in their degree program.
  • Counseling students in their future careers.

Note: The scholarship provided will not cover any cost related to living or accommodation. Students will have to support these costs themselves and show proof of the same before the university prior to applying for the scholarship.

For 2022-2023, application forms were closed on 30 June 2022. For the upcoming batch of 2023-2024, forms are yet to be announced in the month of April .

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant is eligible if he/she meets any one of the following three mentioned criteria:

  • The applicant must be either seeking asylum or is a partner/dependant of an asylum seeker.
  • The eligible asylum seeker or refugee or partner/dependant must have been granted Discretionary Leave to Remain (DLR) or some other form of temporary status.
  • The applicant can be a refugee who is not having an opportunity to access student finance due to past study.

Apart from meeting one criterion from above, an applicant must strictly meet all the below-mentioned criteria:

  • Must have an offer (conditional/unconditional) from the University of Bradford for the respective year of application.
  • A reference in support of the application provided by a school, college, community, or voluntary group that the applicant is currently attending.
  • A student who is:
    • Either not able to access student finance or a local authority grant or any other form of mainstream funding;
    • Or who have earlier been under local authority care or are presently classed as care leavers.
  • A student who is living:
    • Either within the Bradford Metropolitan District Council Area;
    • Or within a shorter distance from the university so that they can afford travel costs themselves;
    • Or if they will not require any extra financial support to relocate themselves to Bradford.
  • If he/she doesn’t need any financial support for accommodation and other living expenses.

Students whose English language level is not that high will need to attend a Pre-sessional English preparation course. If any scholarship funding is required for this English course, students will have to arrange it on their own and can not expect this assistance from Bradford college. Having high skills in the English language is a compulsory entry requirement for the University. Note: Applicants must be able to verify their circumstances when called for in order to apply for this scholarship, failing which the application will not be considered.

Note: Premium fee courses in the Faculty of Management and Law is not covered under this scholarship.


Application Process

  • For the University place, the student must apply through UCAS. For any query visit: Learn all about filling in your UCAS application for uni.
  • Postgraduate students will need to apply for a place on a course via the University of Bradford website.
  • For applying for the University of Bradford Sanctuary Scholarship, students need to get in touch with the University of Bradford.
  • Students must go through the guidance notes fully before filling up the application form.
  • Students must provide their personal details along with proof of the same for verification.
  • Students must fill in the Applicant’s Personal Statement – “About Me”.
  • Students must provide a supporting statement from a referee in support of their application.
  • The referee must sign all application forms before submitting them.

Selection Process

  • All applicants must keep in mind that this a competitive process.
  • It is not to be expected that all applications shall be entertained.
  • The decision of the panel is final and there shall not be any appeals process if in case an application is not successful.
  • If an application is successful and is accepted the University will contact the student to carry forward to the next stage of selection.
  • The applicant will receive an interview invitation to discuss the information provided in the application form.
  • Finally, if the applicant is selected for the University of Bradford Sanctuary Scholarships he/she will be informed within two weeks.

Note: In case of an unsuccessful application, the students are welcome to reapply next year.


Grant Details

The University of Bradford awards the forced migrants seeking asylum, or those already granted refugee status who cannot access student finance with University of Bradford Sanctuary Scholarships. This scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time Undergraduate/Postgraduate courses and also for prospective Postgraduate students including current Undergraduates. However, this scholarship is not available for Postgraduate Research students or current Postgraduate students.

Students must not assume that because they have an offer for a course at Bradford they will be automatically considered for the Scholarship because they will not be. Applications will be rejected if they are not accompanied by the referee’s supporting statement and signature.
